****It's a boy****
The kitty I found last night is a boy. I took him to the vet, got shots de worming etc. I'll have to get him neutered. Trying to introduce the dogs...any and all advice it welcomed. My son named him Remy. The vet said he's under weight and about 9 months old. No chip, he also said that kitty has been on the street a while. He's eating like a horse!

Back story..http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x9608749

And of course pics...

He's teasing the dogs cuz there's a gate the door they can't get to him.

He needs a good brushing..

2. What a fine lookin' fella! And love the name.
Lots of Cajuns named Remy. I've always liked it.

As to advice, it sounds like you're doing fine. Introduce him to the dogs slowly and they'll work it out.

Congratulations, and welcome to the DU critter family, Remy. I look forward to hearing of his progress.

8. Thanks..
I hope you're right and they'll work it out. Right now, the dogs whine "at" the cat and he growls at them. I held the cat and let the dogs sniff/lick him...don't think Remy was very happy but he didn't "freak" out. Just growled and hissed a little. I'm just going to take it slow and hope it works out.

3. He has a lot of missed meals to make up for!
...and is probably blown away by all the food and love surrounding him.

What a week he has had! The most important week of his young life.

Congratulations to you, too!

9. Black cat, white sofa--yep. Sounds familiar!
LOL. Get used to seeing it--I'll guarantee that the white sofa is gonna become one of his favorite places to hang out. That is some kind of Murphy's Law sort of thing with cats, I think. (If you had a black sofa a white cat would have found you, I'm pretty sure.)

What did your vet tell you to do about food for your boy? Since you say he's eating hugely and enthusiastically, I'd think his underweight state will not last long with proper food and "cat rest."

One tip I will give you for dealing with mats in his fur is to go buy a seam ripper at a sewing store. They are a sort of J/fishhook shaped blade that works great on breaking up mats in cat fur. Start up next to his skin and work AWAY from him. That shaper little blade is much quicker and it pulls less. I learned that trick from an animal shelter manager years ago. She found a mat in Tillie(youbitch)'s underarm when she was at my house one evening. Tillie(you bitch) was so-named because she was a vile tempered rescue that tortured hell out of my household for 17 years. She was also the most beautiful medium/long haired tabby I have ever seen in my life, and she was not welcome at any groomer's establishment in town. It fell to me to groom her and I have scars to this day from my early attempts to help her. That seam ripper may have saved both our lives.

Best to you and yours! Congrats on the boy's arrival.

11. The sofa is actually tan..
it looks white because of the way the light was hitting it and the flash.

The vet said kitten food for about a month to get some weight on him, then adult food. He gave me science diet stuff to start. I bought some litter--dumped the rice I was using--and filled his pan with that.

I also brushed him, I used the furminator that I use on the dogs, he seemed to like it. But he's curled in my the sink, he doesn't seem to care for the dogs. LOL..the vet said it could take some time, but they should be fine.

I want to move his litter pan and food to the basement on the laundry room side. That's where I used to keep it for my other cat, and the dogs couldn't get to it. I put a kitty door in the door to the laundry room side so he could eat and potty and the dog couldn't get to him. Worked nicely.

This cat came to me much the same way as my last one. He (Busterkitty) was on my deck on night, I opened the door and in he came, rolled over for a belly rub and that was that. He was mine for the next 12 years. I lost him 6 years ago. Last night it was a strange bunch of coincidences that I ended up out front that late. There he was, shivering, I fed him, open the door and in he waltzed (Remy). I think it was meant to be.

He didn't even try to run out when the door was open this morning. Maybe he thinks he's home too.

12. Well done Remy, you picked a very decent human to own.
Congrats to the new family.

:applause:

The furkids will eventually either become cozy friends or the cat will ignore. I have 2 ferals that sneak into the livingroom when our dog is asleep just to get close and check him out but RUN when he wakes up.

My (now deceased) tabby used to sleep with the dog .. go figger.

Kane (dog) is a big baby and wouldn't hurt the cats (they are about 6 years old now) but they don't know that.

You have done well!

13. Take care of him. He needs someone to take care of him.
Ok, he is of the male persuasion.
He needs his operation at the appropriate time, otherwise he will smell up the house and generally mess up the place, in spots.
I do not think it essential to give them names, tho' some do think it essential.
I think the cat goes by sound, not by name.
It will take about a minimum of two weeks for them to be compatible, and there may still be battles, from time to time. (Cat and dogs).
But once they realize they all feed at the same trough they settle in.

16. Yes, the vet explained that to me...
I will be getting that done ASAP. My last kitty was already neutered when he found me. I'm hoping they settle in with each other (dogs and him). My last kitty got along very well with my dogs, but I think that was because I had him first. The dogs came into HIS house, no issues.

omg what a good cat, he went to the exact right place for help :loveya: :loveya: He looks really special, I love his funny white spot. He's gonna be big when he gets enough to eat.

I was wondering in the other thread about how you'd know if he had worms. I brought a feral in (I trap-neuter-returned her last year but the neighbors were bothering me about her maybe pooping in the yard someday :eyes:) and she has teh worms :( I don't want her to give it to the housecats so I have to figure out what to treat her or trap her to go to the vet. I'm all up in the air about this right now.. I might have to sedate her with a poison dart LOL!

17. He's only 7lbs right now..
you can't tell but he's skin and bones. Poor thing.

I used a makeshift litter box last night and he pottied in it, so I took some to the vet with me today and they'll check it. The vet also gave him some medicine to de-worm. I have another dose to give in a week. Just squirt it in their mouth. I have to watch for tapeworm, as that doesn't show up under the microscope, but if he has it I'll see evidence of it in his poo.

Is there a way you can take a poo sample to your vet? Once I thought one of my dogs had worms, and I just took a sample to the vet. The dog didn't even go.

Everyone is saying he's gonna be big, I hope so. My last kitty was 25lbs, he was a whopper! I hope the dogs and him can coexist, and he's happy.

21. you can tell!
You can tell from the pics he's skin and bones but you can also tell he's gonna be a big cat! I cannot get over how lucky he is, it's like he landed in Heaven.

I can't get hold of this feral I brought in, she's a good kitty, plays with the others and uses the litter box, but she is very wild. I saw ringworms in her poop (I knew it was hers because she'd just come up from the basement and I never saw that before she came in) and I've talked with my vets office about it over the phone once. So mayyyybe if I take my oldest cat in and tell them why this worries me (you know how they require a visit to do anything) then perhaps they'll help me think of a way to treat the wild one. I have managed to get a little of the over-the-counter ringworm medicine into her food, she eats dinner in a separate dish from the other three. Well I'll get it straightened out somehow...

22. I hope you're able to get her treated...
You're a good person taking care of feral cats. They're lucky you're around. I know a lady that does that, she has a whole bunch she takes care of. Someone had a little set up in my neighborhood, for ferals. Little house like things for shelter, food etc. Some asshole complained and I think they had to take it away.

People that take the time to care for wild/feral cats are good people.

I don't know how luck he thinks he is, trying to get acquainted with the two beasts..(my dogs) LOL! This is where he's been staying...

He goes from being outside to a sink..don't know how much better that is..LOL

His food and litter box is in there, and there's a gate at the door so the dogs can't get in but they can check each other out.

that's exactly what's goin on in my neighborhood. I wish they'd just consider it lucky I spent the time and cash-dollar$ to have four cats fixed.

It looks like the sink is this kitty's THRONE, he's probably so glad to have water when he wants it! :loveya:

edit(I do still have a couple of shelters out there, I think raccoons and foxes may have actually squeezed into them, which is fine with me, our neighborhood is so crowded I'm happy to be the one giving a little room for the animals.)

33. It's really easy to see tapeworms outside of...
...the "poo". In cats, they look like little cooked rice grains. They tend to stick to the fur around the anus. BTW, an FYI for all: Fleas are the intermediate hosts of the tapeworm species cats get. If you eradicate the fleas, you won't get a recurrence of tapeworms.

Remy sure is a handsome boy.

15. I'm glad the vet could confirm he'd been on the streets for a while.
I would hate to think of him as just an escapee with someone looking for him. I'm sooo glad he's found a good home. :) Our newest boy, George (had a bum ear so he got a Harry Potter referenced name) showed up a winter or so ago and moved into a flower pot until we decided to bring him in. I'm glad he found us. :)

Named him Ronin.

He was with us for a little less than a year. Someone left the door open one night, and the feral side took him out the door.

Never saw Ronin again.

Keep the door closed.

27. Very cool name for a cat...
I also enjoyed the movie Ronin. :-) I'll be careful and keep the door closed. Showed no interest in getting out today, in fact ran the opposite direction. LOL! It's too cold, once it warms up, I'll be very careful.

I've always kept my cats indoors. Except a few times they got out before I could catch them. One of them would only go as far as the front patio or deck and flop. He was a stray and he found me, guess he didn't want to be homeless again.

I'm sorry Ronin didn't come back. :-(
