...I have a 9-month-old Dachshund. A few months after we got her she started having dry heaves, mostly in the middle of the night. We figured that she was chewing on her bedding and was getting fuzzies in her throat, no big deal. We mentioned it to the vet, who thought it was no big deal too, but to keep an eye on it. Well, the overnight heaving then gave way to unexpected-during-the-day heaves, and they were becoming productive. After Christmas she had a particularly bad bout where she threw up mainly bile. Back to the vet, who took X-rays of her digestive tract. It turns out that her esophagus is a little narrower than usual, which may be causing some sort of reflux, or inability to fully digest food at times. He prescribed an anti-nausea drug along with an indigestion pill, which we break into quarters and give her twice a day. That has helped greatly. Only very occasionally does she get the upset tummy, and when she does she gives us enough warning that we can take her someplace to cut down on the mess, should there be any (there really hasn't, thank God). The vet did say that if it continued the next step would be endoscopy, which I hope does not happen.
(And, with her being a Dachshund, we have to watch when she's outside that she doesn't pick up and eat stuff that's not good for her.)
Long story short, by all means take her to the vet just to get things ruled out -- and for your peace of mind if nothing else. All it may be is a case of acid reflux or some such, or perhaps like you said he just drinks too much all at once and his tummy just can't handle it. If he appears well and isn't losing weight, it may not be anything to worry about at all.
It's worrisome, that's for sure. Good luck.
