Got any healthy snack ideas for dawg?
I'm looking for healty, nutritious snacks - around 100 calories or so - that I can munch on in between meals or maybe eat as side dishes to my main meals. Also, I'm lazy and don't want to put much effort into it. I'm arleady doing apples, bananas, microwave popcorn, and maybe grapes. What else is there?

3. Thanks P.I.G.
I *love* mixed nuts, almonds and walnuts, but I have to buy those 100 calorie packs that have ..... like 6 nuts in there, 'cause otherwise I'll munch 'til I see the bottom of the can. :)

6. Me too.
I try to buy em raw and roast them myself with a little bit of this and that for flavoring. Another thing you could try is edamame. I could eat that stuff by the pound (sprinkled with some sea salt) and it is both healthy and tasty.

2. easty oatmeal bars or muffins
Make a bunch all at once and freeze. Here's a recip:

You can sub applesauce in stuff that needs sugar too and that will make it healthier.

5. those look good, but they involve using that *thing* ...
I don't really know how to use that big thing with the door and the burners on top. I mainly use it to heat up water for making instant hot chocolate. But that's about it.

10. ha ha....um, I'm guessing dawg is single??
Nothing a potential spouse likes more than a guy who knows how to use that "thing", expecially for making some semi-healthy oatmeal muffins.

11. Thought about getting some celery.
Maybe use it to scoop up hummus, or something like that. Not looking like the taste of my semen is going to much matter for at least the next year or so, though. :(

8. cottage cheese with chopped herbs/veggies, crackers and V-8
Edited on Thu Jan-27-11 05:43 PM by grasswire
That's my FAVORITE healthy snack.

Chop a carrot, celery, parsley, radish, whatever, and add to a cup of low-fat cottage cheese with some dill weed and black pepper. Get a few whole grain crackers and a glass of V-8 juice.

Nom.

16. I love it, Bucky ....
but that will fatten me up like nobody's business. I went to the grocery store the other day. I bought a measuring spoon. I wanted to see just how much a tablespoon really was ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... It just made me want to cry. I used to eat a banana with peanut butter for a snack. The banana was probably about 150 calories. The peanut butter I was putting on it? 1,250 or so! :P

17. Dates are very sweet, nutritious and not high calorie...apples and citrus
fruits are great too, as are carrots and radishes...I have been doing that for years.
I make a vegie tray for football games.
I eat maybe one bag of chips per year, and not even that last year, and no other snack type "foods". Cuts way down on salt and general grease intake.

It's a good idea.

18. Raw vegetables are your friend.
In addition to celery, carrots are great and super easy if you buy the bags of drilled "baby"carrots, radishes (prep the whole bunch at once and refrigerate them in a closed container with a little bit of water in the bottom to keep them crisp), raw broccoli or cauliflower florets (again, prep a bunch at one time and keep it ready for a quick snack or addition to a meal. Dip most raw veggies into a diet salad dressing if you're bored with eating them plain.

If you like coleslaw, try making it with a diet salad dressing.

Cooking veggies with steam or by blanching is a quick and easy way to make a side dish. Steamed broccoli or cauliflower is good. As soon as you remove them from the heat toss with a small amount of cider or wine vinegar or lemon juice. The acid brightens the flavor. It's also easy to cook fresh spinach or chard (for spinach if you're using crinkly leaf spinach, strip out the central stalk and discard before cooking. For chard, strip it out, dice it, and add to the cook pot before you start heating the water because the stems need more cooking time than the leaves.

20. Popcorn?

not sure about the healthy part, but it is cheap and versitile. Salt and butter aren't the only topping yanno.

My fave is adding cumin, salt, pepper, and chili powder.

By the way, I don't mean that microwave crap. You can also use oil that's good.. err.. better for ya. I use canola.

:hi:

21. I second this, buy a bag of organic popcorn for $1+
And pop it in a big pot with a lid. It is cheaper and more healthy, because you can use olive oil and because of the diacetyl in microwave popcorn. The complete instructions are on the bag, but basically you cover the bottom of the pot in a thin layer of oil, pour in popcorn, one kernel deep, put over med/high heat and shake gently until popping stops.

24. Buy some store made antipasto. Slice an apple into slices. Put the antipasto onto the apple slices
Edited on Thu Jan-27-11 09:42 PM by applegrove
and eat. You can also replace the antipasto with an tiny slice of brie cheese. Leave the skin on the apple slices. It is better for you.
