I've made an improbable friend.
Each morning as I leave my parking garage, I pass a security guard on my way to my office. We exchange pleasantries nearly every day. A few weeks ago we actually learned each other's names. His name is Smith -- Smitty.

When I came back to work after being out with Mrs. V. for two weeks, he was thrilled to see me. Said he'd been worried because I hadn't said anything about vacation. I told him what had happened and he was very concerned. Up until that moment I didn't know if he knew that I am gay (do we ever really know if someone knows unless we've told them?), but he knows now and obviously is cool. Said he'd pray for Mrs. V.

Yesterday she called, in trouble, couldn't care for herself and asked me to come home. I stopped very briefly on the way to the garage to tell him why I was leaving in such a rush. As I pulled out of the garage, he came over and handed me a pen & paper, asking for my number. I gave it.

Yesterday evening I got a text from him, asking if Mrs. V. was okay, asking if I was okay. I was touched. I am touched.

He is a warm, caring man and I'm glad I know him.

1. There are still some truly honest, caring people in the world.
Makes you feel good, doesn't it?

3. My dear Bertha...
Now, that's a lovely story.

Some people never open up enough to let something like this happen. But both of you are warm, open, friendly people...

Bingo!

I'm so glad for you...

4. I love Smitty for loving you.

I don't understand, though, how he's an improbable friend. You're perfectly lovable, so it seems very probable to me that another loving and lovable human being would pick up on that. Love him back, my sweet.

6. Sometimes real life angels find us when we aren't expecting it
I'm not a big believer in angels but I've found some in the last year. I'm glad you met Smitty. He sounds like one.

8. I think I understand the concept of "improbable friend" -- one from a relationship...
Edited on Thu Jan-27-11 04:46 PM by MiddleFingerMom
.
.
.
.
...that generally doesn't EVOLVE into a friendship.
.
.
.
Believe it or not, I am PAINFULLY shy around strangers. Once I get to
know someone, all bets are fucking off -- so friends have a LOT of
trouble remembering how "aloof" or "distant" or "cold" I had seemed to
be at first.
.
.
.
Over the years I've lived here, I've become friends with a couple of my
busdrivers (they're usually friendly and nice in Tucson -- one of the
surprising things I used to tell people back East after I'd visit here).
.
.
.
One looked like a short, older Elvis with a pompadour that, in my memory...
rose to gravitationally improbable heights. He, like I, was a cat-lover
and we both lost a very special cat at about the same time and -- though on
the exterior we're both kinda rough, gruff guys -- we had no problem telling
each other that we had both cried our eyes out for a couple of days.
.
.
.
I haven't seen him for awhile (I moved across town and RARELY take his
route anymore) and I miss our conversations.
.
.
.
I'm glad you've found yet another friend... I'm not sure one can have too many.

What a great story. Made me a little teary eyed. Kindness is sometimes so hard to come by. for you and Mrs. V.

People can be quite wonderful. All the best to Mrs. V, to you, and to Smitty.

14. I know many security guards
from my time bouncing.

Even now, when I see them, we shake, embrace, shake again, and say hello.

Welcome to the club. :)

15. I am so sorry to hear that Mrs. V isn't well.
I hope she will be OK. I hope that you are OK. I know I'm not around much, but I hope you know I do think of you guys often. I'm pulling for you guys. Hope the kitties are well too.
I truly like being surprised by humans. It happens so rarely. It sounds like you have made a true friend.
