We only got about 6-10 inches but it caused chaos like no one's business:

5,6,8 hour commutes were common all over the area. Just unbelievable

1. Corporations REALLY need to relax their telecommuting rules in cases like these.
Is it really worth risking life, limb and/or sanity for the purpose of having to physically be at a cube?

2. Early release of both the govt and private corps at roughly the same time
Right as the worst weather descended was part of the problem- heavy traffic, sleet, and accidents occured . But yeah, if more people had just telecommuted yesterday morning maybe some of this could have been avoided. Maybe.

3. My company doesn't have snow days, and they put you on probation if you use too many personal days.
In my view, demanding that people work in hazardous conditions is just creating potential for a lawsuit when someone inevitably crashes their car trying to get to work.

Even the CEO was snowed in on January 12th, and everyone else was expected to show up.

4. It took my cousin nine hours to get home to Poolesville, MD
Usually a 30-45 minute drive. And it was her birthday too, poor thing.

5. Lee Highway in Arlington was a parking lot.
All evening. At one point the drivers collectively snapped. Horns started blaring and blaring. That was to show the snow who was boss, I guess.

7. Crazy guy on my train today was quoting Robert DeNiro in Cape Fear
Not the worst commute but certainly the strangest.

8. Years ago
I walked a mile to the closest subway station, fighting wind and blizzard conditions, then waited, it seemed forever, on the sub-zero platform for a train, and got to work on time. It took me nearly two hours. Out of hundreds of employees, only a handful made it in. After about a half-hour (about the time I'd warmed up,) we were told to go home, so I repeated the two-hour trek. To add insult to injury, everyone got paid for the snow day and we few who struggled didn't even get a 'thank you.' I never made an extra effort for that company again.
