Seriously, would you do THIS to your five year old child (scary video)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEvo6Eau-Xg&feature=player_embedded

This is one of those shows about moms who put their young kids in beauty pagaents. I'm not sure which was more heartbreaking - the fact that the child was in complete terror of having her eyebrows waxed (she was even bribed with a piece of candy) or the fact that the mom said "If it was me I would have just held her down and let it ripped"

I am so glad my mother never forced me into these contests.

1. My wife was in the room when I clicked that.
My wife, who gets a mani-pedi done monthly done monthly, and has her brow's waxed at the same time. My wife, a kindergarten teacher who doesn't have a violent bone in her body.

Her statement: "If I was getting my eyebrows done and I saw someone sitting in the next booth doing that to a 5 year old kid, I think they'd be dragging me out of there in handcuffs! I'd grab the first pair of scissors I could find and....well, better that she be raised a motherless orphan than be raised by a heartless b&(#*$ like that!"

I love my wife

4. Mom looked a little chunky there. Grandma should come down and do some forced liposuction on her.
Just hold her down and let the vacuum rip.

7. No, never, and it's hard to believe that any mom would
"Hold her down and rip it off"???

That is child abuse, pure and simple. Poor girl, I hope she makes it to adulthood unscarred, physically and emotionally, but I doubt that.

8. It's child abuse.
When she said that the last time she had it done to her, skin had been ripped off, I really lost it. That salon should have its license yanked. And I don't think I can ever stomach watching another TLC show. They've really sunk to a new low.

10. The scariest (and saddest) show on TV.
I see the ads for Toddlers and Tiaras when I watch What Not To Wear and they are heart-breaking. You just ache for those little girls. The ad last week featured a father who "imagines himself on stage" when his toddler is on stage - dancing provocatively in stripper wear and stripper makeup. This week's ad featured a mother who proclaims "I am obsessed with the Miss America Pageant! That's the whole reason I wanted a little girl!" Wow. And the pageants are all a scam. I watched a documentary on these pageants a few years ago on A+E. The contestants pay big fees to participate. The parents spend thousands on costumes, dance lessons, and traveling. And these are not wealthy people. This is a very sad part of our culture - toddlers being judged on appearance by adults in a for profit business which counts on the low self esteem of the parents. Poor little girls. I hope there is a relative, neighbor, friend's mother, or teacher along the way who instills value in these girls beyond appearance.

12. I think I saw that special about the behind-the-scenes of these things
And these families and especially the moms will pay tens of thousands of dollars for their kids to maybe (if they are lucky) win a few hundred dollars and a big trophy. I remember there was a mom who talked about doing it for scholarship money and all I thought was 'why not stop wasting that money on pageants an save it for the damn scholarships.'

16. Lynne, it would be interesting to know how much actual
scholarship exists. The family featured in the documentary was close to the poverty level. Dad was working several jobs to pay for everything. Mom was totally devoted to the pageants. And the little girls (there were at least 2 participating) were bored with all the waiting around, travel, and tedious makeup applications and costume fittings. It was clearly Mom's dream which she insisted was the girls'. And, of course, kids just want to please Mom and Dad. Beyond sad.

13. The biggest prize might be a thousand $. Only one child will win that.
The dress itself could cost close to that. Then these parents have to spend on travel to these pageants, on lessons for the child, etc. Doesn't sound like a good way to make money, that's for sure.

11. Ugh
What the hell is wrong with people...someone needs to rip "something" off that mom...but it wouldn't be her heart because she doesn't fucking have one. Related to Dick Cheney maybe?

18. That is absofrigginluteinly HORRID of that mom
Mom, who is definitely no symbol of beauty, forces this on the child?

I wonder whatever becomes of these little girls who are force fed how to look beautiful, but wonder if they are taught to develop their MINDS....
