1. Between the boys and the dogs, I gave up!

I can't really blame the dogs but the boys can't seem to leave their boots outside.

2. In my place, we have to take off our shoes and put on slippers

"Mud rooms" (preferably a two-word expression) actually is a good name for a part of the house expressly dedicated to storage of snow-covered, muddy footwear. When I was a kid growing up in New York, our "mud room" was the front porch. Anyone caught coming in the main part of the house with wet, snow-covered, and/or muddy shoes or boots had their footwear thrown away. Mom didn't fool around.

Leave it to a Southerner to come up with an expression for something we Northerners take for granted (granted, I used to live in the South for exactly 19 years to the date). Well, ya gotta give credit where credit is due.
