1. I urge you to do research first.
They are adorable, but I've heard they are also stinky and very noisy at night.

have had numerous guinea pigs, hamsters, a chinchilla (a cutie), and ferrets between us. I think we'll be ok.

2. I agree with AL, research is critical to any non-traditional pet purchase.
But if you feel it is right for your household, I hope you can hook up with a rescue. We have a hedghog rescue in my neck of the woods, and it's great.

4. Hedgehog rescue? Really?
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 05:30 PM by Moondog
Please expand on that. For wild, or semi-domesticated hedgehogs?

My reason for asking - I lived in the UK for several years a while back, and there was a hedgerow of Dog Roses (the typical British hedgerow plant) on one side of the property. In which there was a small, well, colony of hedgehogs. Cute little guys. I'd put food out for them in the winter - I'd been told that they hibernated, but I would see them out foraging for food in winter and since they supposedly ate insects, mostly, I couldn't imagine that they could find many of those. I was told by some locals that they liked cat food, but as it turned out they only liked cat food made of chicken, and not fish. So there I was, this big goofy guy putting out cat food for hedgehogs in the middle of winter.

Anyway they are appealing little critters, and made interesting noises, but they were mostly nocturnal, and I have a hard time envisioning them as pets. Well, as pets in the usual sense of the word. Thus my curiosity.

Edit: correct spelling error

6. As I understand it, they rescue the kind people were trying to keep as pets
and failed to be able to take care of. Don't know if they take "wild" ones.
