What are you doing for New Years Eve?
We are staying home, will probably sleep through it, or get up for a few minutes if the fireworks scare the dog...I hate going out for this holiday.

1. I love going out for this holiday. Always have. But ...
this year, I'm home for the first time in my adult life. I got a four month old kid, so it's all Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin for me, instead of loud music and cheap champagne.

Since the temps are forecast to be very mild.

Of course, the s.o. will probably want to go to the same tawdry bar where I had a crappy time last year...

There's an event at my not-for-profit arts and culture org. I'm $7,000 shy of reaching my annual appeal goal. I will be asking for money all day and night, and generally helping things to run smoothly. My husband and son will come by for cake, champagne and kisses at midnight.

20. probably freezing my ass off
while my face burns

we usually do a bonfire, although it's snowing/raining and the wood may be a tad wet. Not to mention nobody has been motivated so far to make a big pile to burn. There is plenty of cottonwood laying around and it won't take long if the rain lets up and somebody does get motivated.

have a couple bottles of sparkly and most of the usual snacks, need to get some chicken wings, but don't feel like going out in the weather so may not do that this year. I'm sure somebody will need beer so maybe THEY can pick up the wings.

23. Working early New Year's Day... so nothing different.
.
.
.
Some good NYE memories:
.
.
.
Nurnberg, Germany. It's called Sylvesterabend and, as far as fireworks
go... it's Germany's 4th of July. Powerful fireworks were legal then
(may be still) and the place to be was the old castle which, naturally
commanded a view of the entire city. LOUD RAUCOUS DANGEROUS
AND FUN!!!
.
People brought fireworks TO the castle, too -- and drunks were knocking
things like bottle rockets over, sending them INTO the crowd. But also
BEAUTIFUL, as at midnight, you could see a fireworks display on what
seemed like each and every street corner in the city.
.
.
.
.
.
One year, my SO and I decided to spend a quiet NYE at home with another
couple. By somewhat after 11:00 pm we had managed to bore ourselves to
fucking tears, so we bundled up and headed to the nearest bar (about
11:40 or so). Walked in and it was a buncha middle-aged and older people
listening to sad Sinatra on the jukebox and LITERALLY crying in their beers.
The bartender looked at our reactions to this and she said, "Cheer up!!
It doesn't GET any better than this!!!"
.
We beat a HASTY retreat, drove another half-mile or so and found a dive
bar with a raucous, joyous crowd and had a fantastic time.
.
.
.
.
.
I had a friend who lived RIGHT on the border of a bad crack neighborhood
outside of Philadelphia. Threw some of the greatest NYE parties I've ever
been to. Just after 11:00 or so, I went out to his front porch to have a
cigarette. On one side of his rowhouse, he had this really nice Puerto
Rican family and on the other -- crack dealers and their extended families.
.
Up the block came this crowd (probably 30 people or more) of maybe up
to 4 or 5 generations of Puerto Ricans -- from infants being carried to
great-grandmothers being helped along. Several of them are carrying
guitars. They stopped at the house next door and knocked... and when
the people answered the door, they all started singing these BEAUTIFUL
songs to serenade them.
.
I RAN inside, made everybody SWEAR not to ruin what they were about to
see... and took them outside. It was spellbinding. When they finished, the
people inside got their coats and joined them... and they all walked off...
presumably to find their next "victim". It was right at midnight... and the
guys on the OTHER side of my friend's house burst outside and started
firing their guns into the air. We all scurried back inside... the moment gone
but never to be forgotten.
.
.
.
.
.

The unbroken streak of New Years Eve gigs falls after 30+ years. This is a true indication of just how bad the economy is, or just how old, fat, and unemployable I am getting to be.

On the plus side, I won't have to worry about dying in a car wreck on the way home. Just have to dodge those bullets coming down at midnight.

When we lived in NJ we did the Times Square thing, once and it was enough. Bitter cold that year, drunks everywhere. Oh yeah, fun - not.

Here's to you old mark, DU, and World Peas ;) :toast:
