That is, that the wife should "obey" the husband?

I'm talking about in recent years, BTW.

Do any religions still do this in the US?

1. I can't remember specifically if one wedding I went to in '05 had that wording
but it had all sorts of sexist religious (Catholic) bullshit, and crap about woman being the helpmate, and so forth. Gag. No wonder I get a major case of creeps when I set foot in a church. I had to go into one of those mega churches today to donate blood and it really gave me the willies. :scared:

3. I don't think so, but I did go to one where the pastor was talking about how the couple should
LEAVE (their families of origin), CLEAVE (to each other), and BELIEVE (in Jesus Christ).

I almost had to excuse myself because I thought the last one was going to be CONCEIVE. And then I was thinking about HEAVE and GRIEVE.

Southerner, Bible Belt, yadda yadda. It's not archaic, alas, it still happens.

edit: That's one of the millions of reasons why my profile says "Chicago" now.

And Archie said, "as often as possible."

13. "I will submit to your judgment"
I attended a wedding a couple years ago where the bride's vows to the groom included "I will submit to your judgment" - I about swallowed my tongue!

The pastor also told a fat lady "joke."

16. A Baptist one about five years ago
What was interesting was everyone in the church laughed out loud at the concept that the bride might possibly defer to the groom in their future together. They are a great couple, and they share decisions, but there is no way she would "obey" him in anything particularly if he phrased it as a command.
