Home Improvement - Privacy Fencing
My next home improvement project is going to be to replace a part of the common fence between my house and my neighbor's house.

I want COMPLETE privacy - - or at least the closest thing there is to complete privacy. I'm looking for something that I can afford, but something where you cannot see through the boards, if at all possible.

DU, what sayeth you as to which type of fencing is the best to provide the most privacy? And yes, I'm planting shrubs, etc., as well, but that takes a while.

1. When we moved into our neighborhood (10 years ago), we got two notes in our mailbox....
They were both printed from a computer, and said the same thing, "NO FENCE PLEASE!", but in different fonts and sizes, perhaps to give the impression that they were from different people.

I nailed both to the mailbox post with a hand-written reply that read something like:

"It is a federal offense to place something in a USPS mailbox that has not been affixed with adequate postage and processed through the USPS office. As for the fence, we were actually planning on a 10' privacy fence with razor wire along the entire perimeter."

Within a few hours, the note had been ripped off of the nail and we never heard anything more about it. Ten years later, our back yard is still the neighborhood sledding area.

4. Gee, that was a warm welcome to the neighborhood, right???!!!
In my particular situation, some neighbors who have lived next to me for years are finally buying a larger house. I hate to see them go, and worry what I'm going to get in their place. Thus, the need for the fence.

Now, if they sell the house to a good looking, single dude - then I may be putting up a gate!!! LOL

5. I never figured out who it was, but I have suspects. I just don't really care.
We've got a great yard for sledding. There's a mound (about 10' high) that a high-tension wire pole is planted in and the kids use that for the launch point. We've got the open space to go through. I didn't want a fence anyway. I want garden space and that needs SUNLIGHT!

7. Oh hell, you don't need a damn fence for that. The wife and I have regular excursions.
That's how our youngest child was conceived! Well, in a thunderstorm, and on the hill behind the house we lived in at the time, but still.

8. Stockade fence.
I have no idea what these cost, but I don't think you're going to find much else that offers the kind of privacy you're looking for.

10. Here the boards shrink and swell with the weather...
We have the dog ear planks and it's pretty private. I think it's about as economical as you can get for the privacy.

12. We put in a regular wood fence last year
it was expensive, and getting the main posts in was not a DIY job.

15. Well...
since you seem to be doing things we can't discuss back there, put a row of 6-inch dogear pickets on both sides of the fence crossboards, with one row offset by half a picket.
