A very strange encounter in the supermarket....help me figure it out.
I went to a suburban supermarket about 1 PM this afternoon, just outside of Saint Paul, MN. It's my regular store. Here's what happened:

As I came into the market, I noticed two women in the produce section. One was mid to late 40s, dressed and looking like a typical middle-aged woman in this area. She was picking out produce. With her was a very tall (probably 6') slender woman of an age I couldn't determine at the time since her back was to me. She was with the other woman, clearly. She wore a black vinyl mini-skirt, a lace blouse, and black stiletto-heel shoes. Her hair was dark and perfect, in a sort of page-boy style. As the other woman shopped for produce, this tall woman stood stock still, and did not move a muscle. She didn't seem to be watching the other woman, but stood beside the shopping cart. I thought it a bit odd, but went on with my business.

As I did, I noticed several people looking intently at the taller woman, but shrugged it off.

After I finished my first pass at shopping, I headed past the deli counter of the supermarket. The two women were there. The tall woman was now standing next to the cart, still absolutely still. As I came closer, I could see her face. She was in her early 20s, I think. But her face was quite extraordinary. She had some sort of heavy, even-toned pancake makeup on that was absolutely flat, and a pale Caucasian flesh color. She had eye make-up that was almost doll-like. No lipstick, and she had extremely thin lips, set in an absolutely straight line. Nothing moved. She did not blink. There was absolutely no movement in her body or face. I tried not to stare, but several other people were staring frankly at her. Zero reaction to anything. Not to the other woman. Not to anyone nearby. She looked into middle space, and seemed to pay no attention whatever to her surroundings. Her face simply reminded me of a doll of some kind.

I passed within four feet of her, and the closer I got, the more her face looked like a doll's face. Artificial, like a fully made-up geisha, but not that style of makeup at all. The makeup blurred all her features and simply looked like a mask of some kind, but not garish in any way. It was as though she was some sort of automaton, like those Japanese robotic figures that simulate human expressions, but when not actually doing something are completely unanimated.

I saw the two a couple of other times in the store, but at a distance. Each time, she was standing stock still, completely motionless as the older woman shopped. Each time, people were staring at her. It was that strange.

I believe the older woman was her mother, for some reason, but I'm completely puzzled by the young woman. I've never seen anything like it in my 65 years on the planet, and the strangeness was so striking that many other shoppers were frozen and staring at her.

Does anyone have any idea what this might have been? Was the young woman in makeup for some sort of play? Does she have some sort of mental illness? The older woman acted perfectly normal, like any other shopper in the store. It is so puzzling, and that doll-like face and the very out of place clothing have me wondering what this all was. I get around a lot, but this was the strangest thing I've ever encountered in a public place.

Any ideas?

3. Nope, but I've been there many times. I recognize the clothing
style, but not the rest. I can tell you that you don't see either in suburban Minnesota, though. This was way more odd than the scene on Hollywood Blvd, an old hangout of mine.

there would be a better venue than a suburban supermarket, I'd think. I've done performance art, and that wouldn't be my choice of venue.

Just a completely flat affect and makeup designed to make her face look doll-like. And the hooker outfit. It certainly seemed to catch everyone's attention, and maybe that was all it was about. I just don't know.

Did you look around for a camera to see if you were being filmed?

Maybe she was recovering from an accident, and wore makeup to hide scars, and was still because moving still hurt.

16. Seriously, perhaps a woman/man undergoing sex-change therapy?
I dunno. Few women are that tall. Well, in my world, anyway. I'm only 5 feet.

But the heavy make-up, the lack of animation - perhaps a guy contemplating surgery?

I have complete sympathy for those who feel they are born into the wrong bodies. It must be hell. Must be more hell to try to adjust that issue.

26. My guess, she was on her way to some sort of audition, like you suggested.
Though, some women, not just those going for a try-out, keep their faces very still to avoid wrinkles or messing up their makeup, ditto with the clothes. Maybe mom was driving her and said, "We have a little time, the market is on the way to the community playhouse, let's stop off to pick up something for your father's dinner." Anyway, interesting story.

48. Would you be brave enough to walk up to her and say "Hello?"
that is, if you saw them again? The fact that many people stared makes me think that something was wrong here, and perhaps people sometimes should step up and not totally mind their own business, but try to understand if this woman needed some kind of help.

I think that's what I would have done, but maybe not the FIRST time I saw them but if I saw them again. It might turn out not to be a good idea, but how much harm could come of it?

50. I agree with some sort of consensual "slave" arrangement
Wardrobe that sounds like fetish wear, the severe haircut and make-up, etc. all point to some role she's "forced" to play. It's possible that the other woman is not even a "partner" in the whole thing, but that the "slave" is compelled to stand at attention even when her "Master" is somewhere else. For some, the "slave" role is 24/7. The older woman may have been her mother -- why she'd feel the need to take the "slave" to the store with her is puzzling, but perhaps she's in denial or has just gotten used to it. The older woman may have been the wife of the "Master" or, of course, may be the "Mistress" herself, but I think you'd have seen some indicative interaction between them.

59. was she a transsexual (maybe pre-op)?
before your gender reassignment surgery, you are asked to dress and live as you plan to dress and live after the surgery, if you're going male to female, you need to start dressing and living as a woman

the thing is, some of these folks have unique ideas of how women actually dress, well, they actually like to play with costume and sexy, suggestive clothes more than most of us women would ever bother to, at least to go to the grocery store

heavy make-up because if they have not been on hormones that long, or they have not had their beard completely removed by electrolysis, it works better with heavy make-up than trying to get away with a lighter hand

she might be really tense about moving, still trying to work out how to move and walk "like a woman"

not saying that's what you saw, but it "might" be

she'll loosen up as she goes, might have been one of her first outings, maybe even her first outing with her mom like that
