4. Yes!
I will be very happy when the zombie "phenomenon" burns itself out, so to speak.

Of course, something equally as obnoxious will fill that void, so you can't win ;)

12. The "phenomenon" has been going since 1968

...and it will roam the earth forever, or until the fresh meat runs out.

18. I disagree on the phenomenon having been going that long.
Yes, Romero's movie started it all, but we didn't have some kind of zombie movie almost every single year since 1968, either. This is a fairly recent phenomenon, like within the last decade or so, and that's why I use the term. People have been brought up to think it's "so cool!!!11!!" when it's not. How many people today would want to see a movie where the zombies are just a cheap labor force, as depicted in "Cast A Deadly Spell"? The zombies in that movie are pretty pitiful, but used pretty much correctly in the context of magic and voodoo.

People don't want to see "historically correct" zombies any more. They want their ever-ramped-up gore-effects, fast-moving dead bodies that don't seem to rot or get rigor mortis. Zombies have been around in literature and folklore for centuries, but today's audiences just wouldn't stand (or sit) for that kind of zombie movie. It's too bad that the truly suspenseful movies just aren't that successful any more without the excessive gore, or leaving out gore completely. Sure, there are exceptions, but they aren't the norm. Hollywood has dumbed everyone down too much.

when it's not."

Is that so? I thought how cool something is, was simply a matter of taste.

25. You're right, it is a matter of taste.
However, my point was that somewhere along the line, Hollywood managed to make it truly a phenomenon, like the spate of other undead themes that have been 'resurrected'. But they've excised the history aspect, turned it into a problem of technology/biology instead of the reasons given in folklore. There's such a wealth of stories there, and they've dumped it all for the latest and greatest (space virii!! fungus!! and whatever other modern reasons for the dead walking again...)

Personally, I find magick- and/or spirit-based backgrounds for the walking dead to be far more insidious and creepy than what we've got today. But again, audiences don't really want that kind of undead because they've been swayed away from it by today's type of zombie. And it's too bad, for everyone and for the whole genre.

11. Yes. I don't understand the attraction.
Unless it's just the mindless, remorseless, guilt-free killing sprees that follow their emergence. Which is sad.

26. Me!
Actually, it's not so much the zombie movies and TV shows in and of themselves so much as the zombie behavior of Hollywood. First it was the goddamned vampires, then the goddamned werewolves hitched a ride with the goddamned vampires (yet never quite came into their own as a phenomenon), and now the goddamned zombies.

And goddamned Zombie Hollywood will keep mining the supernatural critters and turning each one they find into "the next phenomenon" ad infinitum, just like they mine graphic novels for (ugh) Yet Another Superhero Movie.

Who, me? Down on peer-pressure let's-all-do-the-same-thing Hollywood, that place without an original frond in its palm trees? Whatever gave you that idea? ;)
