1. Get one of the soft cloth ones that comes with a velcro ball for help "catching."

19. So true! The look on their faces when the ball sticks to the glove...hilarious and sweet at the
same time.

2. I'd say yes, going from the experience with my kids. At 3, they're just learning to catch a ball
the size of a baseball anyway, and it's hard to find nice gloves that are easy enough for little hands to close around the ball. Five is really about the earliest a kid understands that s/he catches the ball with the palm and then "traps" it with the fingers of a glove.

5. Ok, seems like next year or two to start
I thought so. I guess I was just a grandpa in denial thinking grandson was an absolute genius.

Thanks :)

6. Never too early
But never push the kid. If they want to use it, cool. If not, that's ok.
Is this for your child? If not, whose child is it? Maybe you should ask the parents if they think giving the child a glove is a good idea.

9. My grandson
Hehe, I kinda want to surprize daughter too, though.

I was thinking "never too early" myself.

8. It's a time honored tradition.
Get two, one of the toys that age appropriate, and a nice one as an heirloom. That one is for both of you.

12. I like this idea
Then by the time my other grandkid is born and the current one is old enough to actually catch, we can sneak outside and play.

11. It depends on the child. Has he/she shown an interest in baseball?
Will someone take the time to play ball with the child and teach him/her how to throw and catch? You might consider a ball that is lighter and easier to handle than a regular baseball at first.

If you're looking for age appropriate toys that require imagination instead of batteries, you might like this site:

I've been very pleased with the quality of their products and the kids have really enjoyed them.

14. He loves throwing stuff...and
picking stuff up. :D

We used to sit on the porch and he'd spend his time putting things where they go. Toys in box, twigs in yard, clothes in laundry, gravel in driveway, etc. It was hard for him to get the wooden blocks I got him last year to fit properly in the box, but he has it down now.

He gets a lot of outside time with his parents, and they play his games :)

I may get a wee-set and one real glove to build him up to if he is into it.

Thanks for the link. Those are my kind of toys!

:hi:

PS: Hmmm... a child-size rake and snow shovel set may me cool :P

13. Look, if the little ankle biter can't turn the double play by age three,
a new glove won't help one bit.

15. Starting early may be an advantage to his "improvement" stats
Woohoo! If he yells, "the play is at 2nd!" there is nowhere to go but up ;)

20. If you're thinking about an heirloom glove, I strongly recommend Nokona gloves.
They're made in the USA, and the factory has stubbornly stayed in the small Texas town where it's always been -- when the factory burned down several years ago, the owner said he would rebuild, and he has, without losing any jobs. We have one and it's luscious.

24. Nice to know
Getting an "heirloom" glove was my thinking. I may start cheaper now though. He may not even like to play :)

21. That's how a lot of Major League ballplayers got their start
...I forgot to add that softball stars got their start, too.

Get the freakin' mitt for the kid. One day, when he or she grows up, you might have a ballplayer in the family.
