ESPN to call Japan opener from Connecticut

When the first pitch of the 2004 baseball season is thrown, ESPN's announcers will be thousands of miles away.

Instead of calling Tuesday's game between the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Devil Rays from inside the Tokyo Dome, Karl Ravech, Peter Gammons and Harold Reynolds will work from a studio in Bristol, Conn. The decision was based on money and logistical issues.

"We would have loved to be there in person," said Tim Scanlan, ESPN's senior coordinating producer for major league baseball. "But we feel confident we can still tell the same story."

The telecast, live on ESPN2, will start at 5 a.m. EST because of the 14-hour time difference with Japan...
