The picks that make me sick!
Edited on Sat Sep-25-10 12:53 AM by Archae
Putting my Mom's neighbor's 45 rpm records on CD, I recorded 2 songs that were gag-producing.

"Funny Face" by Donna Fargo

And...

Wait for it...

"You Light Up My Life" by Debbie Boone! (urp) (gag) (retch)

1. I remember both.
I can hear both songs in my head without having to click on your links. For the love of God, if you are reading this and you are young and have not heard these, do not click his links!

5. You've been warned, kids.
If you do, you'll regret it the rest of your days. Those are ear badgers; they'll eat your brain.

8. Worse than both of those combined?
That song from 1981 or 1982 called "Never Been to Me."

I think that was the only song in the entire Billboard Hot 100 from whichever year, that I just couldn't bear to listen to. Each of the other 99 songs had something -- if not a lot -- going for it.

10. Fond memories.
Wretched tunes.

Brings back memories of a fishing trip with my alcoholic father. Many trips were promised, few occured, so the recollection, like life itsef, is bitter sweet.

A sunny day, big blue-green Kentucky farm pond, in the row boat with dad and his omnipresent High Ball and a pack of Doral cigarettes. We were catching huge Blue gill and Sun fish all day long. Dad's blue Chevrolet (Body by Fisher) station wagon parked on the bank with the doors flung open, the radio on and that song in hevay rotation on the AM.

Everytime the song played, and often when it wasn't, Dad would burst the tranquil scene by singing a few verses, making up his own foul and vile version of the tume in his best mock hillbilly accent.

What a lush.

Hard to believe I'd miss him.

He liked to sing R rated version of this one to.

How weird is it that I remember this much detail about a day 37 years ago?

Satin Sheets - Jeanne Pruet

This was supposed to be the second link in my post above.

I think the music only made my dad want to drink more. There wasn't much about life that didn't.

16. Actually Jean Shepherd was a guy and an author of some great Americana
The film A Christmas Story was put together from several of his short stories from In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. One of them, "Hairy Gertz and The Forty-Seven Crappies" reminds me a lot of your story.

Thanks for the links: Them's good getting shit faced at the local dive songs.

19. LOL!
I find my error hilarious. I knew there was a reason I knew that name Jean Shepard aside from the female country music star. I love his work though I've only seen it. "A Christmas Story" is very much an autobiography for me. As a child, I even looked like the kid in the movie.

Thanks very much for the compliment. Now I must read Jean Shepard. I want to be a writer when I grow up.

12. Could be worse
I converted a friend's daughter's wedding video from VHS to DVD. you have to digitze in real time. It wasn't too bad until I got to the 30 minutes worth of drunken karaoke singing by a bunch of drunken South Dakotans at the end.
