I finally heard "If you don't like it here then quit!" one too many times yesterday...

So I did.

Fucking asshole employer has been treating me along with everyone else in our department like shit for over a year and telling us we have to "like it or leave because we've got plenty of people out there wanting to come to work and there's no other jobs out there".

The dickhead was still a little surprised when I chose the latter.

1. Good for you. That's some guts right there, podner.
Good luck in whatever you do next.

Maybe you'll set an example around there.

Cheers.

3. That was brave.
I do hope you find something else soon. One of the worst things about the current job market is having to put up with unbelievable shit simply because there's no alternative. Employers know it and they take advantage.

6. I've noticed to the ones advertising for non-skilled labor are feeling real important too
All the ads I see for dishwashers, busboys, janitors, etc. want applicants to email or fax their resumes which must include a cover letter, have four plus years of experience and a half dozen verifiable employment references. Two years ago they'd take anybody with a pulse, next year you'll have to have a two year degree in something for one of these jobs.

9. Exactly!
It pisses me off to no end to be turned down for a shitty part-time receptionist job because I've been out of the job market for years. Duri!ng one interview I was actually told I am "too intellectual" for the job. Everybody is too intellectual for that sort of work and I suspect it's beside the point. They're concern was that I'd be unhappy working 39 hours/wk at minimum wage, and so I would but beggars can't be choosers. F***ers.

Eh, what can we do but take our revenge when the economy turns around? :P

11. It happened during Bill Clinton's 2nd term and will hopefully happen again
Good pay, good benefits and employee leverage.

There's just no common sense out there anymore either. Your story reminded me of another I heard from a friend. Her daughter was laid off from a national bank that we bailed out and couldn't find work and unemployment was not able to cover her bills so therefore she got behind on her car payments, her rent and student loans, all of which went against her credit rating. Now she cannot be employed at a bank anymore because she's considered too "high risk" to be a bank employee by having bad credit.

:hi:

Sometimes you just have to do what you feel.

Good luck!

7. I have done that in my checkered working past, and never regretted it.
Good luck - keep us informed.
FWIW, the boss is probably scared that others will follow your lead...

8. Thanks
I have heard that he's such a well known prick throughout town that quitting or getting fired from his company is considered a good reference.

13. You should email that tidbit to all of your former co-workers
:D

I wonder how he'd react to them all quitting en masse?

17. One of the best days in my working life was when I worked at a frame shop and
was getting treated like shit by the district manager (among many other things, she expected me to move from assistant manager to manager with no raise and no benefits). So I put in my notice and the day I did she fired me. Three of my four coworkers quit the next day. No notice, just called and said "we're gone."

That rocked so hard. The only guy that was left was a dude who had worked there for years and was so stoned out of his mind that he couldn't do simple math (kinda bad if you work at a frame shop). We had to check all of his orders with a fine tooth comb or risk having to cut all the materials over again. That was the one employee they had left at the store. LOL!

16. Had a boss like that. He was a loon and the fact that I lasted in my position for two years
was actually amazing. Most people couldn't last 6 months.

Good luck finding something better.

12. If you hadn't quit, he would have fired you for insubordination.
You didn't like it there. Since the boss' instructions were to quit if you didn't like it, he really left you with no choice.

14. Not just me...he liked to dangle it as a carrot over everyone's head
The only difference between me and most of the other employees is that when he pushed, sometimes I would push back. He really loves yelling at the female employees in front of everyone. I don't know what happened to this dude in his lifetime but he has a very low opinion of his female employees and has sent many running to the bathroom and break room in tears.

20. I was 17 years old (graduated early) and cooking at a Howard Johnson's...
.
.
.
...which was actually a pretty cool, fun job -- good management, fun work, GREAT co-workers
(we had made a camping area in the woods nearby and a LOT of the night staff would go there
to party after work -- big communal tent for crashing).
.
Cute waitresses. Say no more. Say n'MORE!!!!
.
For some idiotic reason, corporate sent both the mgr and asst mgr to two-week seminars at
the same time (in different places). Sent in temporary management. Permanent ASSHOLES.
.
.
The night mgr told me and the other cook that our normally mgmt-approved uniform of jeans
and cook-white shirt and paper hats weren't enough -- we needed to wear the white cook-pants
and goobery li'l vests that were part of the full and proper uniform.
.
.
We resisted. Were told that if we didn't comply, we would be fired.
.
.
.
Took those clothes back to the employee restroom to change and just sat there on benches
for 10 minutes or so... unable, well... unWILLING to bend over FOR THE MAN!!!!!
.
.
.
We marched into his office and when he saw that we hadn't changed, started to give us
some threatening shit until we both tossed those uniforms on his desk in front of him
and... in UNISON  said, "We quit."
.
.
.
.
.
.
Dumbfounded PANIC on his face (dinner rush hour was almost upon us).
.
"But-but-but-but-but... you CAN'T quit!!!!!!"
.
.
A most THOROUGHLY satisfying, "Watch us" -- and out the door we went.
.
(insert George Thorogood guitar-strumming bridge here)
.
.
.
.
We sat in the parking lot, a little bummed-out, a LOT triumphant for about half-an-hour
talking about it.
.
.
.
.
Smoked a joint.
.
.
.
.
Went back inside, sat at the counter and ordered banana splits and had the time of our
lives watching that asshole frantically trying to do ANYYTHING right in preparing and
serving up the orders. More plates of food were dropped that night than acid dropped
at Woodstock.
.
.
.
OK, OK... maybe the pot was responsible for THAT perception.
.
.
.
I've done a lot of personally and professionally satisfying things since then -- the vast
majority of which would impress anyone (including myself) a great deal more than that
night... but it still ranks in my mind as one of the most satisfyingly fun and righteous
"No, fuck YOU" experiences in my life.
.
.
.
