Colo. County Seeks to Preserve Outhouse
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- A group of history buffs is seeking historic designation for a campground outhouse, with one official saying it's important to preserve ``fragments of our history.''

The 4-Hole Log Outhouse was built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, which was organized to employ Americans during Depression and played a key role in the evolution of the nation's parks and forests.

1. my favorite outhouse story . . .
back in 1969, I was lucky enough to go up to South Bristol, Maine, for the launching of Pete Seeger's Hudson River sloop Clearwater . . . at the Harvey F. Gamage Shipyard . . . lots of people, lots of music, a good time by all . . .

at one point during the day, nature called and I asked directions to the men's room . . . I was directed to the far end of a covered pier where there were two doors . . . there was a line at each door, both men and women . . . first time I'd ever seen a unisex restroom . . .

every few minutes someone would exit one of the doors, and invariably they'd be either smiling, giggling, or laughing out loud . . . "This is gonna be good," I thought . . .

when my turn came, I entered a small room with a horizontal plank along one wall . . . in the plank was an oval-shaped hole . . . if you looked in the hole, w-a-a-a-a-y down below was the Maine coast, waves lapping on the rocks . . . "So that's what everyone's laughing at," says I to myself . . .

not quite . . . next to the hole was a rectangular tube at a rather sharp angle, a Maine coast urinal if you will . . . since my needs were only #1, as they say, I opted for the rectangular tube . . .

what I didn't know, but soon found out, was that there was a mighty powerful updraft . . . and whatever you shot into the tube came back at you, with significant velocity . . .

I exited giggling . . . and wiping myself off . . . :)
