1. Thanx for the link
I've been considering a switch to Linux for a while. If for no other reason than to spite the evil Microsoft!

2. This will be helpful.
I'm using Suse Linux Pro 9.0 at this moment, and I love it. The only problem I'm having is I'm having trouble tracking down 3D video drivers, but I know they're out there.

As a computer tech, I feel it's important to know all there is to know about all systems, and I'm just getting started on the serious application of Linux. Any other articles and pages you know of would be appreciated. PM the links if you don't wish to post them here. I would appreciate it.

3. Video drivers are the one big remaining problem in Linux
Just out of curiosity, what sort of video card do you have? Most of the major manufacturers have drivers available on their websites now.

4. To all, SUSE is the best distro, and avoid ATi video cards. To #6,
Which video card?

Nvidia has the best drivers of all.

Heck, with GeForce FX 4600-based cards as low as $100, you might be better off spending the money, if you can. A 4600 in Linux beats the snot out of a 4600 in Windows. (Just think of the 5950FX in Linux... :9 )

Indeed, a Nvidia 4600 in Linux beats the snot out of ATI's Radeon 9800 Pro!!!! (ATi is crap under Linux and their Windows drivers have historically been rubbish too, but for stability rather than performance reasons...)

Now I wonder if UT2004 has its own native Linux executable... the others did and they ROCK.

7. Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400
AGP. The graphics look okay, but are a bit slow, especially with large fonts (bad eyes) and screen draws, and the 3D stuff won't activate at all.

My machine is a parts computer with removable drive bays, and I have hard drives set up on this machine with installs of Win98, Win NT 4.0 Server, Win2K, and XP Pro. The new Suse install is the only one with questionable graphics. I look forward to the Linux programmers figuring it out!

(I have plans to experiment with BeOS 5, and OS/2 Warp 4 (I used to have Warp 3 a few years back, and I really liked it!).

No. Stay away from NVidia's drivers. They're horrid. Linux's i810 driver works for sound. As for the NIC... pretend it doesn't exist. Buy a Realtek or 3Com and be happy.

It is true some Linux kernel people have been developing a reverse-engineered nvnet replacement driver. Still in alpha quality, IIRC.

The graphics drivers, although proprietary, do work well.

Edit: grammar
