beautiful scene shattered by reality
picture the scene; Six PM a beautiful September evening, the green soccer field looks wonderful as I drop off my 11 year old at soccer practice.Out of the corner of my eye I spot a toddler there with her dad and their golden retriever, watching the play, and obviously waiting for somebody's practice to end.

Fast forward to an hour later; practice is over, moms and dads picking up kids and heading home for supper.Like always my daughter is the last kid to walk off the field, so I'm waiting and I see the golden retriever from earlier, still leashed and playful and getting lots of attention from the kids.
Nobody left on the field now, just a few parents chatting or carefully pulling out of the parking lot. The Dad lets the dog off the leash and the dog runs full speed out to the middle of the soccer field and takes a crap in the center of the field. I'm not sure how many were still paying attention, how many actually saw, but I instantly felt so bad for the poor guy who ,with the best intentions, brought his dog to soccer practice. He was mortified.I'm pretty sure he did the right thing and scooped, I didn't wait around.

I have declined to bring the dog to stuff like this for years.I always said it was because the dog demands attention I'd rather put on the soccer.
Now I know there is another reason.I will not soon forget the look on the guy's face.

1. Dogs poo outside. I wouldn't be offended or embarrassed. As long as it's cleaned up, no harm no foul
:hi:

2. Imagine him doing that in front of 100,000+ people
Several years ago the University of Tennessee mascot, Smokey VI, was getting old. They trotted out Smokey VII, the mascot in waiting. He was just a tiny puppy trotting out proudly beside his mentor, VI. Lil' Smokey got right in the center of the endzone, and promptly took a dump. The crowd went wild with laughter.

The poor cheerleader in charge of the pup, had to clean it up in front those 100,000+ people.

4. Geez, I thought you were about to write he ran full speed to the middle of the road.
That would be shattering.

This is only a pile of crap with an awkward moment.

Nowadays, it could have been DAD out there in the center of the field,
"venting" his displeasure about the team's performance.

6. Dogs poop in public. It happens.
I think most people can deal with that reality without their day being ruined.

In fact, all living beings except (most) humans poop in public. That's nature. Poop happens.

9. I think you're making too much of this
I work in UC Berkeley and the campus is dog friendly and an off leash place. People's dogs poop there all the time and the owners scoop it up quite casually. I never see a trace of dog poop anywhere on the campus unless I also see someone scooping it up at the same time.

10. Wait...what?
You're bothered that a dog took a shit? That's what dogs do. They shit outside.

If that bothers you, maybe you shouldn't own a dog.

11. The dog might feel differently...
He might have been thinking, "Damn, I really need to take a shit! I wish they'd turn me loose so I can take care of business. What are all these kids doing running around and nobody's taking a shit in a perfectly good field? What a waste!" :D

12. Sorry your morning was disturbed.
But I'm really glad it wasn't something more serious. For a sec there when you were talking about everyone being gone, I thought the guy had abandoned the dog. Whew!

14. I did too.
Or I thought the dog was going to run into traffic...

My dog usually takes a dump outside...and I don't care who sees it. I carry a bag and I pick it up.

But we are a dog-loving neighborhood here.
