Finally, researchers have determined what's wrong with HFCS
Its NAME.

NEW YORK – The makers of high fructose corn syrup want to sweeten its image with a new name: corn sugar. The Corn Refiners Association applied Tuesday to the federal government for permission to use the name on food labels. The group hopes a new name will ease confusion about the sweetener, which is used in soft drinks, bread, cereal and other products.

4. Would be useful if Yahoo had informed us of where in the 'federal government' they've gone.

6. oh, I know that.
It was the FDA. I had a long argument yesterday with HFPS in GD about this that I abandoned when he insulted my intelligence repeatedly.

7. Technically thats all it is is corn sugar
Edited on Wed Sep-15-10 06:23 AM by TZ
its really not any different than other sugars. Most scientific studies (with human models not rodent) have confirmed this. Calling it Corn Sugar is accurate, because sucrose is cane sugar. As a scientist I can tell you that almost everything you read in the news about HFCS is completely wrong. Sugars all pretty much are alike. Just like proteins, while slightly different are alike (saying HFCSA is different from sugar is like saying the protein found in chicken and the protein found in turkey are completely different things. Not really true.
But what do I know. I'm just a biologist.:sarcasm:
Here's some actual facts from those evil sugar pushers MAYO CLINIC:

8. The current name is misleading, since some people think it has higher levels of fructose
than other sugars.

There was a study posted here not long ago that showed the cancer cells feed on fructose more than sucrose, and three-fourths or more of the brilliant science-minded folk on DU started shouting that this was proof that HFCS was worse for you than table sugar. The only problem was that HFCS has the same fructose and sucrose levels as cane or beet sugar, so the study wasn't making any claim about HFCS at all.

Which pretty much proved that people can't read beneath a headline, and that the name is misleading. So, for people like those DUers who thought the study was about HFCS, they want to change the name.
