We lost a 16-year old student from our district yesterday.
Best they can tell, he clipped the passenger-side curb and swerved a bit before losing control completely and crossing the path of a township dump truck at about a 90 degree angle (opposite directions). The front of his minivan was pretty well demolished. Mercifully, it must have been quick. The schools are closed today, but to the district's credit they are opening from 1-3 this afternoon so students can meet with grief councelors.

We've lost a few students over the years and six or so years ago, the township commissioned a bronze monument for our main park of five children in a ring dance with a vacant spot for a sixth to represent those we've lost.

2. So sorry!

I live in a small tight knit community that has lost many, many children in the approx. twenty years I have lived here. Accidents, illness, drugs. It is truly awful when the whole community goes into mourning. But nothing compared to parents and siblings and grandparents. For them my heart breaks. So senseless. :-(

4. Update: Major tribute at football game Friday night.
He was on the football team and they had their opening game of the season Friday night. The stands were filled with people in home-made shirts in his honor and a team member brought a cross onto the field with his jersey draped over it. At the end of the game, while the teams came together to meet, the coach from the other team presented our coach with a check toward a scholarship fund that will be set up in the student's name.

5. oh, that is so sad. Having lost a teen relative to a car accident about this time
of year, many years back, I have great sympathy for you and the kid's family.

I wonder eventually if no one will be able to drive until they are 18, or something. When I think about how many silly things we did when driving back in the 70s (such as piling tons of kids into station wagons), I am amazed that we survived.

8. That's so sad.
A guy who lived down the hall from me when I lived in residence in first year university died in a car crash recently, as well. It seems like such a waste, doesn't it?
