Is the word "Lady" still offensive at DU?
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 08:26 PM by newcriminal
I haven't been around in awhile, but was reading old posts earlier today. The best one I found was a big flamefest regarding the word lady. So are we allowed to call someone a lady now or not?

Depends on the context of course. For example, "That's not a lady, that's my wife" might be offensive to the wife.

7. i dont think it is offensive. i dont think it is relevant. why? do you call men, gentlemen?
Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 08:56 PM by seabeyond
we dont. but we wont call a woman, woman.... we use girl or lady. why?

i think it is interesting and we might ought think thru if maybe there isnt something there.

i don't need or want to be called "lady". it implies certain behaviors i may not be into.

10. I sometimes greet a friend or acquaintance with "Hey Lady"

I don't think of myself with the word (tough broad is ok with me but I understand others don't like it. I think we can approach words with innocence and adjust usage as needed. Flexibility is a pretty useful trait. Is female or woman or chick offensive?

Heck, is gal offensive? I got called a bitch by a sweet southern gal recently, bless her heart:rofl:
