some ASSHOLE
left a gate open out to the freaking interstate last night or this morning.

Got a call from the neighbor about 10 minutes before daylight "you up and ready to run out the door?" hell no I'm still in bed all sore and shit from overdoing it yesterday. One of HIS friends had seen the gate open and a "whole bunch" (its always a whole bunch) of cattle out on the interstate.

Well that gets the adrenaline going pretty good so I'm getting dressed and loading fence tools and shit in the van when DPS calls "I'm on my way" hahahaha I like to scoop them.

No big deal - there was a little bunch just grazing along the fence of the right-of-way and they went right back up and through the gate with no problem. Thank god I got there before the helpful officer who would have probably parked right in front of them or right next to them and split them into to bunches running in different directions or who knows - people that have no clue how to herd, and especially how to herd range cattle.

So how did YOUR day start?

driving down the road who thought it'd be a cute prank?

How did my day start? Lying there half awake as the dog trotted up the steps having gone downstairs to mark his territory in the front room.

again.

4. I am not sure who or why.
it is a spot where one of several gaslines through the ranch crosses the interstate - there are gates on both sides there. I couldn't see any vehicle tracks so it might have been somebody on foot (migrants, crazy guys - there are two in the general neighborhood that I know of) I came through that gate late Saturday morning, and I know it wasn't me because to the way the chain and snap were hanging (long story involving my anal retentiveness about gates)

It rained Sunday evening, and the animals had walked out on top of any tracks I might have seen otherwise. Didn't seem to be border patrol THIS time (has before) as they usually come through at a different angle.

ugh animal pee in the house, somebody posted a product that looked kind of interesting in a cat/furniture thread the other day - like a spray can with a motion detector on it- might try a coupple of those? is he fixed?

7. Yeah - the problem is that the two dogs get into a pissing match and/or
get lazy from time to time. I have to be away for few weeks and they'll be going to the kennel. I'm going to really spray down the area and hope the scent triggers dissipate while they're gone.

not sure what the regs are
this is directly onto the interstate and it is actually El Paso Nat. Gas's (grammar?) right-of-way

I know there are cattle guards on frontage roads and after exits onto other roads but I can't think of any along the actual interstate directly anywhere - all gates that I know of.

20. Ah yeah
gotta comply with the regs. Seems to me a cattle guard would be safer than bungholes leaving the gate open and letting cattle out onto the interstate ;)

21. not necessarily
guards work pretty good with pavement but when they are on dirt roads they tend to fill up with runoff and grow weeds and then you get livestock learning how to walk them. There is a nice big box guard on another right of way (don't ask - this place should be called rancho right of way) for the electric company that gets filled with sand every year and just about that often some cow gets hung up in it.

Not a fun job extricating a pissed off cow with her legs stuck in a cattle guard. In fact the little homemade one that used to separate two pastures here at the house got removed after a cow broke two legs in it and we had to pull her up and out with the neighbor's tractor then euthanize her. I'm not really fond of them.

22. growing up in the country
I saw them everywhere, we had a couple on our place and a lot of the neighbors had them and I can never remember a cow getting stuck in one all those years. I used to always think "damn, what if the cow sticks her foot in there", but somehow they never did. I guess we were just lucky.

2. My dear Kali!
What an awful way to start your day, sweetie!

Mine was a LOT more peaceful...

I woke up, rolled over to see the clock, decided it was too early to get up, and went back to sleep!

Hope your day continues to be a lot better than it started, really!

13. that would just "invite"
dipshits to drive through the fence:mad:

which is why we don't lock gates - easier to go shut an open gate than fix torn up or cut fence

me back through a gate. I barely made it to my car alive, with those slavering beasts on my tail... :scared:

18. The dog woke me up, so I settled her down.
Then 30 minutes later the cat woke me up.

So then I got up. Grr.

Still sounds more peaceful than your morning. Hope your day is getting better.

19.  it could have been so much worse
when single animals get out and panic - THAT is when it gets scary - because they get REALLY stupid and will run across the pavement or be so frightened they don't see the open gates (or where you have had to cut the fence or whatever)

and then you get the idiots who don't slow down. I guess they think hitting a 600 to 1500 bovine is like running over a skunk. NOT. It's more like a head-on with another vehicle only with more guts and gore.
