I just had an annoying conversation with my doctor
who was going on about how great Zell's book is. Disturbing. She said basically all she cares about is that her taxes stay low. I had figured her for a yuppie from the start, but it's still annoying. I didn't want to debate her on it; it's not wise to debate someone when they have a razor blade at your foot.

1. While the majority of doctors are,
or try to be, decent, caring professionals, there are enough of them who aren't to give the whole profession a bad name.

My own gynecologist showed herself to be a premier wingnut a couple of weeks ago during my annual exam when she claimed that "we're being punished" for Roe v. Wade (I had told her about friends of mine, my age, late 30's, who'd been diagnosed with breast cancer when they had no risk factors, and she insisted that the increasing breast cancer rate was due to abortion, never mind that none of my friends had ever even thought of having one), among other little RW talking point gems.

2. Wow, that's medically sound reasoning

I guess that in her book AIDS is punishment for homosexuality.

I'd love to know what she thinks the increase in prostate cancer is due to. Internet porn, perhaps?

4. Yes, "medically sound reasoning"
indeed, especially since that abortion-breast cancer link was totally, thoroughly debunked and discredited YEARS ago!

10. Years ago I went to an obstetrician who delivered
my kids and asked him about birth control. That's when I discovered he was a Catholic and would not prescribe birth control. He DID send me to Planned Parenthood where I did get it - that was before "the pill." That was my only personal run-in with a physician and religious beliefs.

3. My doctor asked me if I plan to see The Passion (she is very
fundamentalist). I told her that the message of Christ is forgiveness and that movie doesn't sound like it conveys that thought. I went on to say that much of Christ's message is twisted, for example, the placement of the Ten Commandments at court houses, by Christians when the Ten Commandments are Old Testament. Wouldn't the better message when one enters a court house be "Forgive Infinitely"? She agreed with me and said these were perspectives she had never considered, and that I ought to go into politics.

I didn't tell her that I think religious messages are all inappropriate in public buildings.

5. I asked my doctor if she was
"philosophically opposed to Social Security Disability" as my previous two docs had been. She smiled softly and said "No." She works at an Interfaith Council Healthcare Center that seems pretty hip. Finally.

12. PHILOSOPHICALLY OPPOSED
TO SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY? WTF? WTF kind of doctor is that? What BULLSHIT! WTF do they expect you to do if you're permanently physically disabled, unable to work, and too young for regular social security? Do they think people are lazy bums who ASK to be badly injured on the job or otherwise? Jesus, NOW I've fucking heard it ALL!

8. Always ask doctors their politics...
Years ago, pre-childbirth, I had medical phobias so severe that I'd feel faint even just walking through a hospital. Getting blood drawn was a hellacious ordeal for me; I'd stress out about it for days. The only way I could calm myself down enough to let someone draw blood or do any other medical thing to me was to ask them who they planned to vote for.

I guess I figured that since they were doing something invasive to me, I might as well ask a question usually considered invasive and inappropriate, thereby restoring the power balance a little.

11. Had a doctor a couple years ago...
...who couldn't stop talking to me about his stocks. I worked at a Borders bookstore at the time and apparently I'd helped him find a book on investing. I didn't recognize or remember him when I first went to him for a checkup. The next two times I went to see him it was the same thing. I'd have to interrupt him to ask him any questions that I had. After the third time I never went back to him.

13. I guess this is what annoys me the most
This woman isn't stupid. She's not incapable of understanding what's going on. What she is is willfully ignorant. By saying she's just concerned about her taxes, and that's her only concern, she's being intellectually lazy.
I expect that people that have been fooled because of *'s antics learn what has happened, they would be angry at the least. I know I would be in their case. But what about my Stepford doctor? She doesn't even care what's going on so long as it doesn't burst her little bubble of self-concern. How do you do anything about people like that?

14. I'm afraid there's not a whole lot you can do.
She will not change unless there's something that BushCo does that will personally affect her in a negative way. I think she has a characteristic that is common amongst conservatives: selfishness. It's not her kid that's getting busted up in Iraq. It's not her family that doesn't have health insurance. It's not her friend who can't marry because he's gay. And on and on.

15. Yeah, that sums it up
I admit I did see it coming when she was going off on what was happenning to Martha Stewart. Not that I think it's fair, but, is that all the impact things have for her? If your biggest problem is what happens to Martha Stewart (barring that you ARE Martha Stewart), then you've got it pretty good.
