Jesus Told Man To Run Down Black Woman
:eyes:

<snip>

A motorist who said Jesus told him to run down a woman because she is black has committed no crime, a St. Louis County judge decided Thursday in blaming a diabetes-induced psychosis.

Steven Johnson is not guilty of first-degree assault by reason of insanity, Circuit Judge Mark Seigel ruled.

Eleanor Hickerson, a stranger to Johnson, was standing at a bus stop in University City last year when she was struck and seriously injured. She sent word to court that the outcome would be all right with her.

Under Missouri law, the verdict requires Johnson, now 48, of St. Peters, to spend six months in state custody for psychiatric evaluation.

4. Being diabetic myself,
I've never experienced something quite that bad... "diabetes-induced psychosis". However, I know that having severly low blood sugar really impairs your mental functioning. Several years ago, my ex-bf found me holding onto my birth control pills, and I was claiming that I was going to use them to treat my low blood sugar?!? WTF? I only have vague memories of that, and it's really scary. So yeah, this dude needs help, but sounds like he needs as much help learning to control his diabetes (and realize when it's not in control and he needs to not drive) as he needs psychiatric evaluation...

5. I was wondering about that...
What kind of message does this send regarding people with diabetes? This decision sets a bad precedent.

6. Fortunately not
Incapacity is a well-defined area of legal concern. Almost any illness can cause incapacity -- or no disease at all. Diabetes-induced mental illness is also very well-known, and most people with diabetes are aware of the possibility.

The decision, fortunately, sets no bad legal precedent. The bad precedent is a society that has abandoned the seriously ill to fend for themselves with no medical or psychiatric care. And in a "Jesus-simple" society like ours can be, J.C. will get the blame more often than He should.

Mr. Johnson obviously has serious problems. The fact that he dares to be seriously ill in a backward state is just the start.

7. I feel sure our prayers will help
him overcome his problem. Jesus told me He should never have allowed that man to run over the woman. He was only kidding.
