18. A guy who made statements like "Sometimes I feel lonesome, even in the middle of a crowd"...
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 11:19 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
...who he was, what he had, NONE of that helped, NONE of that mattered. It was like that part in Tombstone where Doc Holliday is talking to Wyatt Earp about Johnny Ringo and says "A man like that just has a great big hole inside of him..."

He was absolutely an American tragedy.

6. "Most controversial entertainer of the year" -- 1956
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 11:39 AM by The Midway Rebel
Listen to him here. 19 years old, a thick Southern accent that he ain't tamed yet, before the Army, before Dr. Nick, before Hollywood, before he was destroyed by his own fame.

Listen to the question about marijuana. Was he telling the truth?

13. He died on my birthday. I can still remember hearing on the radio,
"the late, great Elvis Presley" and I wondered, "what?".

But what a sad and pathetic way to die for a man who was so admired. Compare his death with the murder of John Lennon who could only be killed as he was because he was living a free life as a regular person, walking the streets. Elvis was a prisoner of his own fame and paranoia. Also, John was happy and musically on top while Elvis was struggling with his career.

17. Even though Elvis couldn't handle his fame, as far as a singer
and entertainer goes, IMO his talent can't be denied. I understand the poster who stated the comparison with John Lennon. John's my favorite of all time.

19. Elvis songs usually make me want to heave
In particular, whenever I hear "Return to Sender", "Jailhouse Rock", "Viva Las Vegas" "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Are You Lonely Tonight?" on Internet radio, I immediately want to push the mute button. However, I do like "In the Ghetto".
