When's the first time you stepped back and said, "Fuck, I'm no longer cool."
I'm sitting in this hotel room on a Friday night after going out to by some new pants sipping on red wine and avoiding doing any work on this soft little book while listening to Nana Mouskari. As little as FIVE years ago I'd be drinking a Jameson's on ice and listening to Patti Smith while writing a decent article that had some teeth.

Man, I'm no longer cool. Getting old blows.

3. Oh, wow.
Maybe the first time I was teased for having red hair and freckles. Or maybe when I realized I was near-sighted. Or when my parents decided clarinet would be the perfect instrument for me to play in band.

It's really difficult to put my finger on the first time I stepped back and realized I wasn't cool. I'm okay with my dorkishness now, though, and that's cool. :hi:

50. lol
 Heidi

I'm not cool, either, and am proud of it. Why am I not cool? I'm near sighted, too. And I hate to admit it, but I can be a tad bit controlling, but at least I realize it, right? And I'm totally shy at parties. And I like being at home with my kitties and my husband.

But my nieces think I'm cool. Or, they did, before they went to college. Not sure what they think now that I'm a middle aged lady. :D

And just the references to the things you are doing in the room, which I don't "get," will tell you I am not cool and you are.

P.S., and the depths of my uncool are plumbed by my even sort of liking the comic strip "Cathy," which is much maligned in another thread.

20. Working on my Masters and driving a minivan.
A friend and I went out one night to the local college area to have a drink. There we were playing ELO, driving a minivan, in our mid-30s.

Looking around the sidewalks were traditional college students.

At that point we both realized we were not cool.

32. I actually totally got that--I never was cool
and I think it was the coolest thing I could have failed at. Being a giant dork freed me from have to "Fonz" it up--I could always admit when it was wr...wrr....wrong, and I could laugh it off often enough when I was a klutz. Nerdiness let me dress for me and listen to whatever music I liked and let me hang with interesting people sometimes in the weird high school environment that tries to make rules about those things.

The "Revenge of the Nerds" movies were kind of my inspiration for accepting that I just am uncool, but its okay.

Although I probably just wrecked my uncoolness by admitting that being uncool was my version of cool. Can I fix that by being meta-ironic about how hip it was to be square?

36. When I was in my thirties, I had a big scraggly beard and shaved it off once, at which
point a lovely young coed, fifteen years or so my junior opined that I looked so much younger clean shaven. It didn't much impress me at the time, but I remembered it some years later when my beard started to grey, and I thought, Well, I'll juuust take off a few years by shaaaving -- at which point I discovered that I had grown a double chin :eyes:

34. I startedv to suspect it thirty years ago, when I heard myself saying "How can kids today think
that noise is music?" My state of denial deepened about a decade later, when I started hearing the tunes of my youth remixed as elevator muzak. It finally dawned on me that I had reached terminal uncoolness after about another ten years, when I started to wonder why I was hearing so many old grooves, every riff of which I had once known by heart, playing over the supermarket PA system late at night -- and realized that the old artists must be selling cheap bulk licenses

Other old farts will be sitting on their porches yelling "Get off my lawn!" but I won't have a lawn and the front of my house will look like a science fiction movie with all manner of people arriving and departing in all sorts of vehicles: flying boots, skateboards, scooters, tandem bicycles, antique motorcycles, and the occasional time traveler flying a fusion powered DeLorean, police box Tardis or space alien's flying saucer.

41. I never was cool. But I sure thought I was!
The better question for me would be: When did you grow up and figure out that you had the delusion of cool rather than the actual state of it?

And yeah, as a bona fide crone (55) I would love to argue the concept that getting old blows, but I would be lying. I'm doing my best to stay in good physical shape, I run and bike, I do 3 days a week of strength training, but when I traveled with my 24 year old cousin to London, NO WAY could I stay up and party every night the way he did. I lasted 2 nights in a row, then trundled back to the hotel to watch BBC and drink French wine.

But here's my story and I'm sticking to it: When you get old you don't need to be cool anymore, cuz you have nothing left to prove to either yourself or the world. Therefore, you use you (limited) energy for other, more worthwhile pursuits.

Like it? It's yours to use!
