Band called Arcade Fire. A Mosrite bass and a hollow body. Rare to even see one.

Edit: so rare I forgot how to spell the brand name.

3. Given the horror stories I've read on the web
about the guy selling them, Ed Roman, I would avoid him like the plague. Ed Elliot, an original Mosrite employee, is building high-end reproductions of them and Hallmark Guitars has a model called "The '60 Classic" that's a dead ringer for the Mosrite 'The Ventures' Model with the exception of a slightly different tremolo system. There's even a die-hard Mosrite fan in Australia (owner of Tym Guitars) who's making what I've read are excellent reproductions. I'd take any of those routes before dealing with Roman.

I also find it ironic that he's all "zOMG! There are tons of fakes! Don't buy one of those, buy one from us!!11!!!1!!!" and yet one of the supposed authentic vintage Mosrites he once had pictured on his site was clearly a Japanese copy. It was missing the crucial "of California" under the "mosrite" on the headstock, and it had a Bigsby tremolo. AFAIK Semie Moseley NEVER made a "The Ventures" Model with a Bigsby so even if it had been an American-made Mosrite, if Roman got it that way it was clearly not original and not worth what he was asking for it. He also claims that "Dealers actually affixed decals on guitars that were already sold to them. In fact some of the Ventures models predate the original contract with "The Ventures"." Again, afaik, Moseley actually silk-screened the logo on the headstocks and a fake waterslide 'The Ventures' decal would be almost as easy to spot as a Japanese headstock logo.

Having said all that, though, I do think Mosrites are some of the most bad-ass-looking guitars ever. :)

4. I'm not seeing either a bass or a hollow body on the website.
So, I dunno. Maybe the ones used by the band on The Daily Show were vintage or knockoffs. Good info. But, man, anyone in the instrument/amp biz is a bit nuts. Much bad mojo there.

Anyways, here's Ricky:

5. I don't think anyone's currently reproducing the basses
or hollow bodies, so those most likely were the genuine item. There probably aren't any companies making them because most people associate the name "Mosrite" with "The Ventures" Model, which is kinda shortchanges the other Mosrites Semie made, 'cause he made some cool ones:

Mosrite Celebrity:

Mosrite Combo:

Forgot earlier that there's also a company (TNM Guitars) that makes a tribute to Semie's Joe Maphis Doubleneck, but it's expensive:

7. Nice!
The bass is the bass version of the Joe Maphis Model guitar, and the guitar looks like a Mosrite Celebrity. Those Joe Maphis basses are pretty rare, afaik, so that's a real find he's got there.

8. Y'all know that when Semie designed the Mostrite guitar...
he allegedly took a Strat, layed it upside down on a sheet of paper and traced the outline? The rest is guitar history. It figures they'd remake them with the mainstreaming of the Ramones into popular culture and the boomers reaching the age of aquisition.

They are making these too now.

I do not buy ANY new music gear but that Joe Maphis model is suh-wee-eeet lookin'.

Wanna see something that makes me wanna hurl? Check this out: http://www.fender.com/news/index.php?display_article=199

Corporations ruin everything eventually. Somehow, I am not sure Joe would approve.

10. I don't like the look of them.
Colors are ok. But the dumb cutaways, the discredited Bigsby trem...the slant on the neck pickup..

I'm not a prospective buyer.
