Oasis vs. Bob Dylan: Oasis wins!
If you doubt me, post some lines of some lyrics from Bob Dylan that are better than some other Oasis lyrics that you post and we'll see who comes out #1.

3. Wikipedia doesn't say that he is dead.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_dylan

And even if he was, that would only mean that there are not enough people that remember him to update his article.

6. Okay:
Bob Dylan's Dream

While riding on a train goin' west
I feel asleep for take my a rest
I dreamed a dream that make me sad
Concerning myself and the first few friends I had.

With half-damp eyes I stared to the room
Where my friends and I spent many an afternoon
Where we together weathered many a storm
Laughin' and singing 'till the early hours of the morn'.

By the old wooden stove where our hats was hung
Our words were told, our songs were songs
Where we longed for nothin' and were satisfied
Joking and talking about the world outside.

With haunted hearts through the heat and cold
We never thought we could ever get very old
We thought we could sit forever in fun
Our chances really was a million to one.

As easy it was to tell black from white
It was all that easy to tell wrong from right
And our choices they were few and the thought never hit
That the one road we traveled would ever shatter and split.

How many a year has passed and gone
Many a gamble has been lost and won
And many a road taken by many a first friend
And each one I've never seen again.

I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
That we could sit simply in that room again
Ten thousand dollars at the drop of a hat
I'd give it all gladly if our lives could be like that.

Champagne Supernova

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Wake up the dawn and ask her why
A dreamer dreams she never dies
Wipe that tear away now from your eye
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you when we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Cos people believe that they're
Gonna get away for the summer
But you and I, we live and die
The world's still spinning round
We don't know why
Why, why, why, why

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
Slowly walking down the hall
Faster than a cannon ball
Where were you while we were getting high?

Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova in the sky
Some day you will find me
Caught beneath the landslide
In a champagne supernova
A champagne supernova in the sky

Cos people believe that they're
Gonna get away for the summer
But you and I, we live and die
The world's still spinning round
We don't know why
Why, why, why, why

How many special people change
How many lives are living strange
Where were you when we were getting high?
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high
We were getting high

8. This is just one of many Dylan songs that mean so much
I Shall Be Released

They say ev’rything can be replaced
Yet ev’ry distance is not near
So I remember ev’ry face
Of ev’ry man who put me here
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

They say ev’ry man needs protection
They say ev’ry man must fall
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd
Is a man who swears he’s not to blame
All day long I hear him shout so loud
Crying out that he was framed
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east
Any day now, any day now
I shall be released

11. Here is another of the greats
with dylan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DD3PS3UKsOA

Neil is always smiling in both and Robbie is always smiling in every video I've seen.

My Back Pages

Crimson flames tied through my ears
Rollin’ high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads
Using ideas as my maps
“We’ll meet on edges, soon,” said I
Proud ’neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Girls’ faces formed the forward path
From phony jealousy
To memorizing politics
Of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists
Unthought of, though, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

A self-ordained professor’s tongue
Too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty
Is just equality in school
“Equality,” I spoke the word
As if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

In a soldier’s stance, I aimed my hand
At the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I’d become my enemy
In the instant that I preach
My pathway led by confusion boats
Mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats
Too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms
Quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now

21. I'm preety sure he was agreeing with your opinion
and his comments were jibe at the OP's premise that Oasis' songs have better lyrics than any bob Dylan has authored.
First off, Oasis is a band, not a person. Though I am not a superfan, I am a fan and my understanding is that until the last album, the gallagher brothers wrote all the songs with Noah doing most of it. Liam is clearly not is Noah's class. Noah has claimed to be the greatest songwriter of all time, then has also backed off that statement, but its clear he thinks highly of his abilities in this department. Dylan is clearly great as well. His career is the stuff of legends.

Its art, people can have different opinions. I remember a guy from HS tellign me a speed metal sogn called Suck My D!ck was the greatest song of all time (though those three words were the only lyrics, just repeated dozens of times to thrashing guitars and drums).

I would agree with you that Dylan is the better songwriter IMO, but I'm fine with others disagreeing. I like them both, have spent a lot of money seeign both live and bought lots of their recordings over the years.

I just wanted to say that I don't think forkboy was disagreeing with you or calling you an f'ing idiot.

29. Well I didn't read it that way,
you put so I would understand. So if he wasn't just flat out calling me an idiot then I apologize for the misunderstanding. As some one else said (and I did earlier) people like the music they like, makes no difference to me and I never put them down for who they enjoy. I work with kids and when I start playing Dylan, the Boss, Stones they just look at me in wonder. Then they start with there stuff I just listen and have no idea what their listening to. And thats okay. Thanks for helping to clear things up.

24. All these years and I can't believe people still don't realize that LoZoccolo is just yanking their
chains.

It's always seemed pretty obvoous to me with all the endless "Oasis was more popular than the Beatles in the 90s" threads we used to get.

Those meant that during the 90s Oasis outsold the Beatles catalog IN THE SAME TIMEFRAME and soooooooo many people just couldn't wait to rush in and conclude that the message was that during the 90s Oasis was more popular than the Beatles were over their career.

I am just tiptoeing back to DU from a six or seven month break, and it is good to see that some traditions continue! :)

(Side note to LZ it was nostalgia for all the Oasis v. Beatles threads that lead me to check out Champagne Supernova on YouTube last week, and that may be what lead me to poke my nose back into the Lounge.)

Of course Other than Champagne Supernova, the stuff I checked out over on teh 'tube was a little bland.

28. oh, come on now... Dylan had poets as his inspiration
and he tells great stories.

from Idiot Wind (although a lot of it, I admit, is his world-weary, cranky delivery..)

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free,
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me.
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above,
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love,
And it makes me feel so sorry.

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats,
Blowing through the letters that we wrote.
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves,
We're idiots, babe.
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

or the whole of Forever Young

"Forever Young"

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

hmm, and Oasis Live Forever -ennh, it sounds ok, but it doesn't have the same emotional resonance - I know that's personal, but.

I do think that Dylan will still be enjoyed long after people have forgotten about Oasis...

Maybe I don't really want to know
How your garden grows
I just want to fly Lately did you ever feel the pain
In the morning rain
As it soaks it to the bone

Maybe I just want to fly
I want to live I don't want to die
Maybe I just want to breath
Maybe I just don't believe
Maybe you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

Maybe I don't really want to know
How your garden grows
I just want to fly Lately did you ever feel the pain
In the morning rain
As it soaks it to the bone

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever
We're gonna live forever
Gonna live forever
Live forever
Forever

30. I'll bet Bob could sign the everloving shit outta "D'you Know What I Mean"...
I met my maker
I made him cry (Bob would blow a few harmonica toots here)
And on my shoulder he asked me why (more harmonica)
His people won't fly through the storm
I said "Listen up man, they don't even know you're born" (Bob goes apeshit on harmonica here)
