1. Why are they drilling right next to a power pole?
Isn't that a little dangerous? :o

(yes, I know the power pole is likely for the power to the pumps ;))

2. not drilling, just pulling
and those dark clouds in the background were the bigger threat! It started popping pretty good right around the time they got everything out. That was Tuesday. Put it back in Thursday with a new pump - they never seem to be repairable.:grr:

3. Yeah, I was looking at those clouds, too.
As for the pumps not being repairable, I would guess that if corrosion is involved, that would be the reason they can't be repaired. Unless you want to go into another business refurbishing down-hole pumps for people

4. the last one lasted for 14 years and was pumping a bunch of sand for several months
before lightening got it. This one was 9 months passed its 5 year warranty. "They say" 10 years is good/"normal" so I suppose we are at average, eh?

6. not sure, but the one we just put in is the same as the one we pulled
supposed to be one of the better and comes with a 5 year warranty (:eyes: )
all the well guys say there is no predicting - some last 20 years some just a couple, about 10 is an average
seems like SOMEBODY needs to work on the technology to at least give a warning or allow some kind of maintenance! If this had happened just a couple of weeks earlier we would have been really effed - it was the only source for the livestock until we got rain and filled our ponds.

and now if you will excuse me I need to go kick Tobin's post:P

8. You're drilling for oil in your back yard? Oh well, I don't know about
these things.
I'm still trying to get back into the gold mining business. Which I never will, I guess. It's all open pit today and that doesn't appeal to me.

16. It would if you find oil. But if you don't, it won't pay at all. In most
locations, you would strike an oil pipeline. You would then get plenty of oil, but soon they would come to get it back.
It's like the gold. We do a lot of digging, but we don't get much gold.

17. Pipelines (carrying oil, gas, fuel, water and sometimes soup)
don't normally go deeper than about 6-8 feet below grade. The only time they go any deeper is if they have to do a horizontal drill under a waterway. Then you're talking 30-50 feet below the deepest part of the waterway, and up to a 7000' span (that's the limit of the machinery to make an accurate HDD.) :D

13. up until about 15 years ago
we survived with stock ponds and a 25 foot hand dug well.

there were a couple of sell off years (before we moved here) but that shallow well collapsed about 5 years ago. Thank dog we had this deep one going. It is actually associated with a titan missile silo! My understanding is that it was the only one ever with the well off site (there is a second well on site).
