Or Newman? Newman was definitely an idiot. But he was only a recurring character, so does he count?

Lou Grant's assessment: I don't mind it when he puts his foot in his mouth. He does that all the time. It's when he puts both in at the same time.

Coach: I'm working on a novel. Going on six years now. I think I might finish it tonight.
Diane: You're writing a novel?
Coach: No, reading it.

Coach: My friends call me "Coach", but my other nickname is Red.
Customer: Why? Because your hair used to be red?
Coach: No, because I read a book.

Claimed he was called "Coach" because he never flew in first class.

Great character played by a great actor and while he had the benefit of good writing, it was his delivery that really sold the character. He just made it look so effortless.

Here's a great scene between him and Allyce Beasley...

38. I LOVE that scene between him and his daughter
Coach Ernie Pantusso. I love Woody but Coach was so great in his deadpan delivery and had such a big heart.

He was also a great foil and setup character for some of the best jokes.

Coach: Norm, how come you and Vera never had any kids?
Norm: I can't, Coach.
Coach: Gee, I'm sorry Norm.
Norm: I look at Vera. I just can't.

Coach: (answering the phone) Cheers. Ok, wait a minute, I'll check. Is there an "Ernie Pantusso" here?
Sam: That's YOU Coach.
Coach: Speaking.

--Good stuff--
