Mother, hit by red light runner, in ICU on life support...
Not trying to be a downer, but... A week ago, my mother was hit by a man who ran a red light, plowing right into the driver side of her car, causing a large number of fractures, as well as a collapsed lung. She's undergone a few surgeries since, has hip surgery tomorrow, and has been intubated since the accident. The prognosis is unclear.

She is medically indigent, and due to her asthma, has been on SSI for several years - she relies on Medicare and Medicaid. She has absolutely no assets and few job skills after the long misfortune of being a housewife to the wrong husband, who, himself warped by Vietnam and the ensuing post-traumatic stress disorder, was cruelly abusive to her.

The only thing that I'm "glad" about (relatively speaking, of course), is that the driver seems to be well-insured and seems to be wealthy based on what I can find out. And he better be, because her medical expenses will easily break the six-figure mark, if they haven't already. She will require intensive nursing care and all sorts of therapy that no $30,000 injury car insurance policy will begin to cover.

This is obviously 99% personal in nature, and yet it's 1% social too, because it brings into focus how precarious the existence of so many people is... It's exactly this kind of shit that got my into politics in the first place back in elementary school. Life can be fucked up, but it doesn't have to be... that's all...

1. looks like there will be a lawyer in your mother's future
Was the driver drinking?

My best wishes to you and to your mother. There should be many social services available to her. Take advantage of everything!

3. He was sober.
The police report says he got distracted... Her little hatchback was no match for his huge 4-door truck... Thank you.

I hope there's a way the idiot that hit her can be made to pay for everything as well as all her pain/suffering.

8. David, I think if there was ever license to be a downer,
your mother's situation is it. And this is the Lounge so it's good to be personal.

I'm very sorry about your mom and wish her a speedy recovery. It sounds like she has been through a lot and you might be surprised by how much strength she has available to deal with her injuries. Speaking as a mother, your concern and support will mean a great deal. My heart goes out to you both.

Do post here when you need to vent. I did it during my separation and divorce and DUers were almost uniformly helpful and supportive. Sending prayers, good vibes and supportive thoughts to you and your mom.

11. Ah, best wishes to your mom and you
Vibes from the Lounge mean a lot. And yes, life can be f&*ked up, but you're absolutely right, it doesn't have to be. Hospitals have many social service outlets, if your mom can take advantage of those, due to her unique social situation, I hope that she can. She has a huge advantage in that she has YOU. You sound like a very caring and careful person.

Best wishes, and take care. Let us know what happens. Hugs.
