TV REVIEW | It's easy for Don to draw you into his world

It's rare for a show entering its fourth season to still be considered Event Television, but sitting down to a new episode of "Mad Men" still gives me a little thrill.
It's impossible not to have a crush on Don Draper, the stereotypical tall, dark and mysterious hero who gets darker and more mysterious as time goes on. He's the kind of cipher on whom you can project all your fantasies, even though the man is mostly smoke and mirrors. The episode starts with the words, "Who is Don Draper?" and it's likely that Don is just as stumped about himself as we are.
9 to 10 p.m. Sundays on AMC
For better or worse, he's the kind of guy you never really get over. And why would you want to?
At the end of last season, it looked as though Don would be starting over. His wife had left him, and he was attempting to start a new company with just a cigarette account and a hotel room. I won't say too much about the first episode because I wouldn't want to rob you of your own little thrill.
I will say this: The music is jazzy and swinging, the office scenes are crackling, and there's an intriguing mix of formal restraint with unbridled libido. The women still wear white gloves, for instance, but nothing comes out of Roger Sterling's mouth that isn't both offensive and choke-on-your-food funny. But that's just Roger -- and when you're watching "Mad Men," you're playing by their rules. It does look as though we'll be seeing more of resident goddess Joan (Christina Hendricks) this season, and there's potential in some new faces. (Sarah Newlin, whom I loved as an evangelist's wife in "True Blood," fits right in with the era and the action.) We get to see where the adventures of Don's ex Betsy have taken her, and how little Sally is adjusting. Elisabeth Moss' Peggy continues to grow and surprise as a crafty career gal.
