Ayrshire Farm in Upperville, Virginia ... certified humane, organic,
predator-friendly farm.

I could get on my soapbox about eating meat, factory farming, etc., but I won't. But if you think you can't live without eating meat, it would be great if you could source it from humane sources like this farm....

The real downside is that these kinds of farms tend to produce really expensive meat. There HAS to be a way to provide environmentally friendly and humane meat to the human population.

2. thanks, Kali...
Looks like a great resource.

I am so concerned about not only the animals having a humane, healthy life, but also a humane death (sounds weird, but there have to be humane standards for slaughter).

3. Top Chef tonight?
Were you watching tonight's episode? or is this a coincidence? that's where their challenge was this week. All the meat, produce and everything was from the farm.

:hi:

Has some things in it, if you are talking about what I think you are, the parts with them always letting the guy that takes off the sash go and such. If you are talking about movies. A few other things also.

6. The truth is that it won't ever be as cheap without cutting corners on either enviro or humaneness
As a country we eat far more meat than is needed for dietary need. If all of the production shifted to smaller. local operations with the most sustainable methods and best animal welfare practices it WOULD be much more expensive to have a lot of meat in our diets, just as it was years ago.

The downside is the lower income people wouldn't be able to afford it at all --that could be remedied somewhat through specific food subsidies in food/meal programs. The upside is that everyone else would be trading $$$ for quantity with the result that many would simply eat less meat.

7. And eating less meat would be a very good thing for people and the planet ...

Humans (and I'm talking mostly of Americans) should be willing to pay more for better quality, whether it's a toaster that lasts more than 2 months, or good, high quality meat from animals that were treated well.

But we like cheap, fast crap whether it's food or some plastic unnecessary item from WalMart, and these habits - which we unfortunately seem to be exporting around the world - are going to destroy this planet. We are just a bunch of idiots, ruining the only place we can live in return for instant gratification.

And I would completely support subsidies for lower income people/families, but then again, I also think unemployment benefits and universal health care are integral parts of a humane and civilized society. Hell, let's make sure everyone has enough food, money, and access to transportation and good housing to live a dignified life - and let's GIVE IT TO EVERYONE whether they ever work a day in their lives or not.

It is often lower income families that are greatly harmed by cheap foods, cheap meat, cheap processed, pre-packaged meals full of sugar, salt and horrible preservatives.

So I conclude, after many years of observation, that humans are not civilized. Don't know if it is even possible. We're by and large cruel, greedy, destructive creatures.
