24. I have always believed that if you treat other people like ladies and gentlemen,

...it signals to them your desire to be treated like a gentleman (or a lady, as the case may be). I do this the best I can, and you know what? It works. Emily Post was onto something. People are still rude to me sometimes but tend to treat me more respectfully than others. What goes around comes around, and karma's a bitch, and all that jazz. It works.

Of course, I am avuncular and condescending, but most people understand that's a joke.

When one stays out of the gutter, it means the other person has to be the one to choose the gutter, or else both are playing nicely and there's no problem. I salute you for realizing you can treat others with kindness and respect and still achieve your goals. I approve, for whatever that's worth.
