I mean geez, anymore you can pretty much understand the entire plot of the movie just from watching the trailer. And think about it - the trailer has all the great action sequences in them, you watch the movie and it's just boring kill time between those great action sequences.

Why spend $12 to see the movie when I can watch the trailor for free AND even go to Wiki to find out how the movie ends.

1. Trailers suck nowadays.
They used to be good 20-25 years ago. Just around 30 seconds, the movie, a few teasers, who is in it, date, bam done.

3. I love trailers. My favorite part of going to the movies.
My favorite was watching the trailer for "The Grudge 2" at "Talladega Nights." The crowd was settled in for a comedy and one of the scariest trailers I've ever seen suddenly gets projected larger than life into the silent theater. I heard a couple of people sobbing by the end. The woman next to me buried her head in her hands. In the silence after the trailer a male voice whispers extremely loud in a tremulous voice "Is it over?"

Some companies show too much of the film. Some don't give any clue. Pixar is very good at hiding the point of their films even with their extended trailers. You could watch the lead-up to Wall-E and have no clue what was coming. Same with UP and Toy Story 3. They show you enough of the characters and a few action clips to get you interested, but the whole plot is still hidden.
