Anyone else remember Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom?
I used to love watching that when I was young.

3. I still think about some of the things I learned, watching it
It wasn't until recently that I realized what an impact that show had on my life. Crazy, really, when I think about it,

27. talked about this the other night
Flipping through the dial and came across that Ice Road Truckers show, where they try to convince you that these people are actually in danger of getting stranded. I mentioned that I remembered Marlin remarking once that 'a vehicle breakdown now would be fatal this far from camp and in this heat.' Even though I was probably only about 10 I figured out pretty quick that whoever was manning the jeep with the camera in it would likely give them a ride home.

6. More like Jeopardy for really smart people
And without that"Can you frame that as a question?" crap.

Colleges sent teams to play a game show against each other. Really smart young people answering really hard questions. It was pretty popular in its time.

As I said in my other post, my sister was an alternate for her college team, but did not get on the show.

5. My entire family loved College Bowl
And we were so disappointed when my sister didn't make onto her college team - she was one of the four alternates that got to go to New York. We all rooted for one of the team members to get sick, though we felt guilty about that.

I never understood why they stopped that show - it was absolutely our favorite game show and the only one the entire family watched.

12. Yes! Marlin Perkins was always safely tucked away in the jeep,
while Jim Fowler was out in the brush trying to bring down a Black Rhino with his bare hands.

10. I remember it. I remember watching it. I do not remember enjoying it.
It was crushingly boring to me. I was a Star Trek fan. But I was quite young. I think the show went away by the time the 70's rolled around, and that happened when I was eight.

13. Yes!
My brother and I would crack up when they brought out the "capture net" to subdue some fierce critter.

That would inspire us to fashion our own "capture nets" - poor doggies and kitties after we'd seen and episode of Wild Kingdom.

We still laugh about that to this day.

I remember that Marlin never seemed to get too excited, even when Jim was getting the $#@$ thrashed out of him.

family used to watch together.

I can still sing the Mutual of Omaha's theme song to this day. But don't ask me to... :P

Marlin Perkins was a personal hero of mine for years...

24. "While I circle in the Land Rover Jim will be wrestling the Wild Wildebeast..."
ALWAYS Marlin was gonna circle in the Land Rover while Jim got down and wrestled whatever dangerous critter they'd found. My family still jokes, "I'll circle in the Land Rover..." rather than do something unpleasant.

32. Why did they always do large man-eating predators?
Marlin would sit in the helicopter talking about how maybe they should get down there and pry Jim out of the mouth of the wolverine who's currently eating him, and then the show would cut away to a commercial: "Hi, I'm Jim Fowler for Mutual of Omaha. They won't cover me because they're not fucking stupid, but everyone who isn't at risk of being eaten at work can get great rates and super service from Mutual of Omaha."
