Test you internet connection speed..
Maestro's beautiful bird photo thread made me curious about my actual internet upload/download capability. We have the "Extreme" Verizon Fios package which includes the middle internet speed offering of 25 megabits upload and download. My test results:

Download 24.76 megabits per second
Upload 24.34 megabits per second

No need to call in a complaint to customer service, at least not today.

What is your connection speed?

http://www.speedtest.net/

BTW his picture thread loaded in just less then a second.
:woohoo:

My wireless internet connection icon say 'excellent' @ 54 Mbps so I don't know how that correlates, unless it's the speed within the house.

8. Yes, that's network speed, doesn't really affect internet speed...
which is the speed from your modem to an internet server. Home network speeds, either ethernet or wireless are usually many times faster than speeds through an internet modem of some sort(dialup, dsl, cable, etc.).

6. mine is a bit below the max
for my DSL line, but to be fair, they advertise "up to 6Mb/s" and "up to 768 kb/s" - so 5.10 Mb/s and .65 Mb/s don't seem bad at all.

I've never had any complaints with the speed of my connection - of course, I pay more than I think I should.

The site also seems to have misidentified my ISP.

7. Hmmm. Verizon FIOS "Extgreme" also, in the DC/MD area...
Both are around 17.5 mb/s. I did three checks and they were all plus/minus 10%.\

Also depends on which location you check it with. I tried Frederick, MD and upload dropped to around 5mb/s.

16. Terrible or Horrific?

I'm embarrassingly un-knowledgeable about this sort of thing. I live in the boonies and can't even get a cell signal, so my guess is that this DSL service isn't the greatest either. We just got DSL last year BTW. Can someone in-the-know interpret the results for me?

what about the Daily Show?

you are fine and I hate you
I can watch you tube if I let them "load up first and then hit replay - a 2 or 3 minute video takes about an hour to load.

take a look at this and gloat about your speed!

on edit I don't know much about anything here either and I am wondering why my upload speed is so much more than download - anybody want to comment?

Tucson is only 50 - 60 miles from me and the number is actually a local call so??? also the company is wrong - it's a tiny company out of VA!

30. I can watch all of them
:P ... lol!

But this is a very new thing for me. I've been offline...period.. for about 2 years (computer issues, didn't consider it important enough to care for awhile, ect.) And if I had even wanted to get online, what I have now wasn't available till recently.

Prior to that, dialup; probably similar to what you've got. For example, while waiting for a page to turn, I could: make the bed, load the woodstove, get the mail ect. Probably similar to what you are dealing with now.

Off subject though... You may not remember, but I always will, the fact that you sent me my first pm! There had been a thread in the lounge about what the subject line of your most recent pm said. I had commented that I had none yet; so you sent me one. I thought then and still do that that was SO sweet and have always wanted to thank you for it. But I rarely see you, so I'm saying it now. Thanks!!! :hi:

.
I know you've always talked about how slow your system is, but... OMG!!!!
.
.
I had dial-up when I lived by Picacho Peak (about 30 miles north of
Tucson). MADDENING!!!! No YouTube -- couldn't even listen to my beloved
streaming Old Time Radio ( OTR.NET -- INCREDIBLE selection of shows).
.
Then I got a Verizon Aircard -- and then we got free Wi-Fi in my area --
so it became a distant nightmarish memory.
.
But... OMG!!!!!
.
.
Here's mine at my present location -- computer is SLOW, but... OMG!!!
.
.
You have given me a way to deal with MY frustration.
.
.
.
"Oh, well. At least I'm not KALI!!!!!!!"

46. it's dial up
and I'm at the end of two miles of AT LEAST 50 year old wire, and who knows how old the other "main" line that taps off of is. (on a ranch)

When I first tried to connect back in 2000 we had a hell of a time until some experienced tech figured out the line was actually still configured as a party line.

It's been around 24 K the whole time - when it rains I either drop to a whopping 16 or it just dies. Once in a while I can get a little over 26, but not often.

I'm used to making do in most aspects of my life but my dream is to be able to watch the Daily Show/Colbert Report someday.

But I think it makes a difference if I am using my wireless card in my laptop, as opposed to being directly plugged into the box.

42. Internet Speed Test: The Fastest ISPs in the U.S. 2010
Is your Web browsing as fast as it could be? Fifteen years after Microsoft introduced Internet Explorer to compete with Netscape Navigator, there are still browser wars going on, as Microsoft, Mozilla, Google, Apple, and others compete to create the software that loads Web pages the fastest. But the number one factor in page load speed (or any kind of download) isn't your browser. It's your Internet service provider (ISP). After all, a Web page can't finish loading until all the bits arrive.
