I want to watch some old VHS tapes--do I need to run a cable through the cable box
for that? I've hooked up the video and audio lines to my TV; thought that was all I'd need to do, as I'm not taping off TV, just watching tapes. I get visual, but no sound. I have a flat screen TV that has separate hookups for a VCR. Can't figure why there's no sound!

1. You'll also need to switch your inputs
You've probably got at least three signal-ins: cable, VCR and DVD. On your remote should be a "source" button that tells the TV which signal-in to look at for signal.

2. Perhaps the audio cable isn't working
Do you have another cable you can try?

It could also be that particular audio input plug that is broken.

Did you try the cable into any of the other inputs?

In theory what you are doing is correct, no need for the cable box, so it might be defective parts (either the cable or the plug)

Mix n match until you find the problem.

3. Actually, I had to switch the cable box cable from the TV to the VCR, which seems odd,
as I wasn't going to be taping from TV. I guess I don't understand why it would be more complicated than using a dvd player, which has a power cord, and hookups for audio/visual. Seems like a closed loop, if I'm just going to watch old tapes. But everything was fine when I hooked the cable box to the VCR.
