Post some songs that are about or mention PLACES WHICH DON'T EXIST!
Like Led Zeppelin's Ramble On, which mentions Mordor, or Harry McClintock's Big Rock Candy Mountain.

13. Hatchy Milatchy
There's a wonderful place that you really should see
Called the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
All boys and girls love this place yes siree
Called the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Peppermint candy and ice cream is free
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Soda pop fountains are under each tree
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Everyone rides on a-merry-go-round
All made of sugar and spice
Lollipops grow right out of the ground
The moon's made of strawberry ice
If you should run and you trip and you fall
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
The ground's made of rubber you bounce like a ball
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy

Oh you-play the whole day and you don't go to bed
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Mommies and Daddies are put there instead
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Hundreds of bunnies lay Easter eggs
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Ride on a pony with candy strip legs
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy
Each day is always a big holiday
Birthdays and parties galore
Dollies and bicycles given away
Whenever you walk in a store
When I return then I never will leave
The Land of Hatchy Milatchy
If you want to go all you do is believe
In the Land of Hatchy Milatchy

28. "Attics of My Life"
Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.

In the attics of my life
Full of cloudy dreams unreal
Full of tastes no tongue can know
And lights no eye can see
When there was no ear to hear
You sang to me
I have spent my life
Seeking all that's still unsung
Bent my ear to hear the tune
And closed my eyes to see
When there were no strings to play
You played to me

In the book of love's own dream
Where all the print is blood
Where all the pages are my days
And all my lights grow old
When I had no wings to fly
You flew to me

You
flew
to me

In the secret space of dreams
Where I dreaming lay amazed
When the secrets all are told
And the petals all unfold
When there was no dream of mine
You dreamed of me

33. Define existence.
To quote the guy in the picture in signature line

"I am a human being, I exist, and if I speak one thought outloud, that thought lives even if I am shoveled into my grave." - Romney Wordsworth - Twilight Zone, The Obsolete Man

How interesting of a paradox, a story not existing by your definition claiming existence, might that be a counter to your argument? From what many might say is a fictional story.

A metaphor or allegory is a thought that can be about many things. A story can be as real as any event in someones life, if it is brought into a persons life as something to think on, it can even help people think, feel, and learn.

It could only be said to not exist if you think a thought is not a form of existence, however that is contradictory at best, and possible paradoxical, therefore something that is impossible to claim. How can you claim a thought does not exist with a thought about existence?

36. My philosophical position on existence has never changed.
Edited on Fri Jun-25-10 10:00 PM by Dr Morbius
That which we perceive as real and existing may or may not exist; it does not matter. We are pretty much committed to dealing with it as though it is real, so it's basically a waste of time to worry about it.

A picture of a pie is not a pie. It is a representation of the pie. The thought is not the thing; the thought is the representation of the thing - whether before the existence of the thing, after the existence of the thing, or instead of the actual existence of the thing. The idea of the thing isn't the actual thing, but the essence which defines it.

Does that help?

49. I had a few replies thought out.
Edited on Sat Jun-26-10 07:16 AM by RandomThoughts
But best to answer with a question.

Is your comment suppose to help in the thought world or the physical one?

Isn't your helping actually the defining of what you perceive as pie? It seems you are defining how you see a picture of pie, a layer to the first concept you mention. So your comment is a picture of a picture of pie.

Note that civility, diplomacy, and education are part of the thought world, and physical coercion and many enforcements are part of the physical.

A rule set in society is part of thought, and people can choose to follow it or not. Coercion and punishment can make someone be somewhere or possible do something, but it can not change the thought world, since coercion only makes things happen in effect, while the intent of a person does not change. Although some people let acts of coercion change their thought world for awhile, but even that change is still a choice, despair from strife is an example of that. And there are also many examples of positive changes to thought world from effects, hope and courage for example. It is important to note that thought is free, it is a choice, although some that use physical methods can change effects, they do not change thoughts unless a person allows that.

While in the thought world, if something is explained, and by choice thought to be correct, then it can change heart, intent and then from that effect. In the physical world something can only be made to happen as long as someone is controlled. And the longer someone is controlled, the longer they thinks on things like being free, and then more control is needed, and it spirals down until it fails. Why also the physical world likes people being dumb and ignorant, since removing thinking is what they think of as the way to make coercion last longer.

By sharing thought, you offer free will freedom of choice to people, and let them decide, and try and discuss your best thoughts on things. And if you do not believe in stealing free will in either spirit or physical worlds, ideas of deception or intimidation, or in the physical coercion by things like violence or suffering, then sharing thoughts becomes the concept and action to best interact with the world in thought, and kindness of action in the physical. And if someone agrees, fine, if not fine.

Note that both honesty with good faith intentions, and deception could be used by a person to share thoughts, so some things should be avoided in the spirit world, and both better and worse ways can lead to effects in peoples life. So really you may be discussing the difference in physical and spirit when you comment on the concept of something existing or not existing.

Or to say it more concisely, maybe all those stories are shared from the different worlds that do exist, even if only in a thought...

50. I think it is dangerous to try to stretch reality.
That way lies conservatism. For them, it is a stark reality that Obama is trying to undermine all that is good about America. Meanwhile the corporate overlords who employ them are seen as benevolent and honorable. Why? Because they won't accept reality as it is; they prefer to redefine reality.

The "thought world" of which you speak exists entirely between your ears. I have my own "thought world", as does everyone else here, and as do the conservatives. All of us: you, me, leftyfingerpop and even Bill Kristol are mortals; we will someday die. Our existence is real but ephemeral; it is temporary. That which "exists" in a thought world cannot exist long. It cannot remain. To equate thought to reality is to embrace the Flying Spaghetti Monster, may you be touched by his noodly appendage.

Pie is pie. We can define pie and then agree upon the definition; we could each try to define pie and argue all day about the definition. Assuming we can agree on what pie is, a picture of that pie isn't the same thing as the pie. A vision of the pie, the idea of the pie, isn't the same thing as the pie. Pie is pie. A is A. B can have material equivalence to A but it cannot be A, because it is B. Do you see? This does not mean B is without value. It doesn't mean the picture of a pie has no intrinsic meaning. It does mean the picture cannot be the same as that which is depicted. The representation isn't the thing.

The clock isn't the time. The clock keeps track of the time, and displays it. But the clock is not time itself.

It's really a waste of time to question the matter, I think. Whether the material existence we know defines reality or does not define reality is irrelevant; treating it as reality is our only wise option. Treating our fantasies and dreams as reality is madness, defined.

51. You think on the topic differently then me.
I disagree with your views on many of those thoughts, although I understand people see things differently and appreciate you sharing your views on the topics.

I agree people have 'thought worlds' and I understand the concept of it all being in the mind, however in my thought world that is not the case, since if it was only in a persons mind, then how could it be in many minds at once. Is not thought, that is the same in many people, the same thought? And if so, it is not just in a persons mind, but in many minds, and if it can be in many minds it can be elsewhere also.

It is not about the politics, you say it creates conservativism, that depends on the person and how they think on things. You have different concepts on what is life and what is death then me I would guess, and I understand parts of that thought world you speak of, although I don't agree with your view of things, and some only see the spaghetti monster, but there is another side that can also be seen, that is not those things.

I am not going to tell you 'how it is' you have a choice of belief, but I do not think it is all in a persons mind. heh, I have seen things outside of my mind, so know it is not a mental perception only.

My conversation is on how all communication is in the thought world, even this discussion is people in the 'thought world' And some of my thoughts reach you, just as you share your thoughts with me. How could they only be in a single person mind and yet this conversation occur?

Your pie is pie comment seems to be a comment on removal of any symbols for anything. The idea that everything has a single value and meaning in all things, catagorized, itemized, static and unchanging. However, the symbol is part of the drum kit, so shrug, I disagree and think many things are different to different people.

To be able to say pie is pie, is to also claim to have understanding or complete certainty of something, although what is pi, maybe it goes on forever without repeating, and is not just a pastry with pleasant aroma and sweet taste.

Your comment on the clock, is a view of representation. It actually is what I am talking about when I talk about a metaphor for metaphors.

A metaphor is like a 2d picture of a 3d item, it is not completly accurate, and misses parts of the concept, because 3d can not be completly understood or shown in 2d. But many representations of the same thing from many different angles, can help a person to understand those things beyond understanding, as I posted before

So you comment on a 3d representation of 4d, a clock, which is something I already said.

And just like a clock is not the time, a metaphor is not the entire picture, but a representation of something beyond the ability to concieve of it. So as night turns to day, the weathering of mountains, and the flow of streams can all be a part of representations of time, as can be those steps through our days, measured by memories fair and less, of both day and night, each a representation of the same thing, something beyond conception, but not only in a persons mind, but also a part of much of life.

What were the answers to the riddles between Bilbo and Gollum? Time, something to really have in your pocket. And as precious as it is, is it a power?, or is the power the choice of how to spend it?

A person must first dream it, then believe it can happen, then do what is needed to make it happen, dreams are the stepping stone to effects, you must first concieve of it to believe it, then believe it to find a way to make it happen, without dreams what can anyone achieve?

And in my views, it requiers both belief, and works, all parts of the same path to move dreams to reality.

I do not say dreams are real, I say to make real, one must dream.

I was going to play a bravado immortal song, but instead I think it is more appropriate to play this song.

My Immortal. I think it is closer to your comments.

Why would you think that?

If a person did not listen to other posts? why would a person put value in an interpretation when it matches what that person wants it to match?

Yet when it does not match what someone wants to hear, many people think it must be wrong, that is not listening or thinking, but just finding things to match what a person already thinks.

I think it is about not playing that game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlNhD0oS5pk

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
How soft your fields so green, can whisper tales of gore,
Of how we calmed the tides of war. We are your overlords.

On we sweep with threshing oar, Our only goal will be the western shore.

So now you'd better stop and rebuild all your ruins,
For peace and trust can win the day despite of all your losing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GkXYsONtqA

Lost in a dream high and wide
Whatever price to keep it by our side
The steps to the top are very steep
King of the hill when all are fast asleep

but I'm Stuck in between
and I know you know what I mean
What a pity...Redemption City

Broken hearts toast another round
And drink to the lost there's not a soul to be found
lonely boy says come what may
I hate to see it always end this way...

but I'm stuck in between
and I know you know what I mean
What a pity...Redemption City

Simple words remind me
Cluttered room haunts me...come back yesterday

The soul is tired and I wanna go home
And close the curtain on everything you've known
But the curtain is high wide and long
And kills the dream, so we sing this simple song

Stuck in between
and I know you know what I mean
What a pity...Redemption City
What a pity

peace~

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-P_TIMBP_oE

Alanis

we'd gather around all in a room fasten our belts engage in dialogue
we'd all slow down rest without guilt not lie without fear disagree sans judgement

we would stay and respond and expand and include and allow and forgive and
enjoy and evolve and discern and inquire and accept and admit and divulge and
open and reach out and speak up

This is utopia this is my utopia
This is my ideal my end in sight
Utopia this is my utopia
This is my nirvana
My ultimate

we'd open our arms we'd all jump in we'd all coast down into safety nets

we would share and listen and support and welcome be propelled by passion not
invest in outcomes we would breathe and be charmed and amused by difference
be gentle and make room for every emotion

we'd provide forums we'd all speak out we'd all be heard we'd all feel seen

we'd rise post-obstacle more defined more grateful we would heal be humbled
and be unstoppable we'd hold close and let go and know when to do which we'd

Depeche Mode

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go2aa6xBH-E&feature=related

Peace will come to me
Peace will come to me

I'm leaving bitterness behind this time
I'm cleaning up my mind
There is no space for the regrets
I will remember to forget

Just look at me
I am walking love incarnate
Look at the frequencies of which I vibrate
I'm going to light up the world

Peace will come to me
Peace will come to me

I'm leaving anger in the past
With all the shadows that it cast
There is a radar in my heart
I should have trusted from the start

Just look at me
I'm a living act of holiness
Giving all the positivity that I possess
I'm going to light up the world

Peace will come to me
Just wait and see
Peace will come to me
It's meant to be
Peace will come to me
Just wait and see
Peace will come to me
It's an inevitability

52. OK. But you have to be my age (old) to remember it:
Itchycoo Park by the Small Faces. Big hit in 1967. Sample Lyric:

What will we do there?

We'll get high!

What will we touch there?

We'll touch the sky!

(LOL)
