Deadhead ALERT: This weekend, all Wolfgang's Vault Grateful Dead Downloads are $5 or less
This Weekend: Dead $5 Downloads and More
Published: June 25 2010 ByPeter Oberg

GRATEFUL DEAD DOWNLOAD SALE

Hey Deadheads, have you been waiting for that deal to come around before adding your favorite sets to your digital collection? Well, it’s your lucky weekend: from Friday through Sunday, all Dead mp3 downloads will be offered for $5 or less! That’s $5 off sets regularly priced at $10, $4 off the $9 sets, etc. And that means a double sale for WVIPs — you’ll receive your normal 30% discount on that lowered price, meaning all Dead downloads will cost you $3.50 or less!

1. I'm not a fan of the Grateful Dead, but
there is a pretty good collection for free download on the Internet Archive:

2. Yep, the "tapers" spirit is kept alive
The band got a little upset a few years ago at people who were selling tapes for a profit, which is how "soundboard" recordings dropped out of the Internet Archive and how "Dick's Picks" and "The Grateful Dead Download Series" rose on the band's own Website.

I see their point...they were always more than generous to "tapers"...but like everything else in life, there's always the one or two bad apples who screw it up for everyone else.

6. I'm rediscovering their stuff...
Thanks to Grateful Dead Radio on Sirius, which we just got with our new van.

I was a teenaged punk rocker who still for the most part tends towards punk, indie rock, avant garde, etc. even as a 40 year old adult.

But I went through a 3-4 year period while I maintained all that other stuff but also got fairly immersed in the Dead culture and music to see what it was about. As such I came to appreciate a good deal of it (I'd say 80% or so). But it sort of faded from view, especially when I lost contact with my friends from college who were much more immersed in it than I was.
