Post a song that references gender. 1st up: Chicago Transit Authority - "I'm a Man"
No ambiguity in this tune. Plus he'd rather be with cats. Never knew that before. Major bonus points in the Lounge! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72NMsRyD-6Q

Well my pad is very messy, got whiskers on my chin
Never had no problems cause I've always paid the rent
I got no time for lovin
Cause my time is all used up
I stand outside creatin
All the groovy kinds of love

I'm a man, yes I am and I can't help but love you so
I'm a man, yes I am and I can't help but love you so

If I had my choice of matter
I'd would rather be with cats
All engrossed in mental chatter
Showing where your mind is at
While relating to each other
How strong the love can be
By resisting all the good times with each groovy chick we see

I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so
I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so

I've got to keep my image
While I'm standing on the floor
If I drop upon my knees
It's just to keep them on my nose
You think that I'm not human
And my heart is made of stone
But I've never had no problems
cause my body's pretty strong

I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so
I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so
I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so

If I had my choice of matter
I would rather be with cats
All engrossed in mental chatter
Showin where your mind is at
While relating to each other
How strong your love can be
By resisting all the good times with each groovy chick we see

I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so
I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so
I'm a man yes I am and I can't help but love you so

I gotta keep my image

Pretty lady
Here I am
With my heart on my sleeve
Hat in my hand

You said you could help me
Help me now
Change my life
Please show me how

A face of clay
And yet so warm
I feel like I've weathered
Eternal storm

You said you could help me
Help me now
Change my life
Please show me how

Pretty lady ...
Pretty lady
Here I am
With my heart on my sleeve
Hat in hand

You said you could help me
Help me now
Change my life
Please show me how

Pretty lady ...

5. Dude looks like a Lady
Gender is an artificial construct created by advertisers and religions. I like songs that fuck with that.

(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady

Cruised into a bar on the shore
Her picture graced the grime on the door
She a long lost love at first bite
Baby maybe you're wrong, but you know it's all right
That's right
Steven tyler made these corrections and I made the best comment down below thank you

-Steven Tyler

(That, that)
(That, that)

Backstage we're having the time
Of our lives until somebody say
Forgive me if I seem out of line
Then she whipped out her gun
And tried to blow me away

(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady

So never judge a book by it's cover
Or who you're going to love by your lover
Love put me wise to her love in disguise
She had the body of a venus
Lord imagine my surprise

(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady

Baby let me follow you down
Let me take a peek dear
Baby let me follow you down
Do me, do me, do me all night
Baby let me follow you down
Turn the other cheek dear
Baby let me follow you down
Do me, do me, do me, do me

(Guitar solo)

Ooh what a funky lady
She like it, like it, like it, like that,
Ooh he was a lady

(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady
(That, that) Dude looks like a lady

Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady
Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady
Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady
Dude, dude, dude, dude looks like a lady

(That that) ya ya ya yya ya yya ya chit chit yaow

(That, that)

46. can't agree with you there
"Gender is an artificial construct created by advertisers and religions. I like songs that fuck with that."

tell that to anyone transgendered who has a strong gender identity - which doesn't match the biologic sex they were born with. They will vehemently disagree that gender is a purely artificial construct.

50. I can't agree with you.
They are going through something I can't define or that I have any personal experience with, so I am in no way denying or undermining their struggle. There is an underlying issue beyond pop music there generalizations, though, I suspect.

But the whole concept of men and women dressing, thinking, acting, seeing the world differently, and all that, is purely a social construct. The only differences are anatomical, with some psychological commonalities thrown in. All the stuff that says "Men are this way, women are that way, men have this trait, women have this trait," are all just constructs of society. Past cultures and societies have had different definitions, and they have often differed dramatically with ours, to the point of complete role reversals. (Many ancients thought of women as the lustier and less monogamous gender, for instance, whereas men were less driven by lust and more by higher love).

52. while there are certainly social aspects to
how we view gender, and a lot of things we associate with masculinity or femininity are socially applied constructs.

However, to claim that gender is entirely social is a viewpoint that could only be espoused by someone whose gender matches their biological sex or who has a completely fluid view of gender.

Anyone with a strong gender identity (which is often clearly expressed very early in childhood, by age 3 or 4) whose biological sex does not match is a clear indicator that gender is not purely socially constructed.

Some expressions of gender are socially constructed, such as the idea that women watch figure skating or men like big trucks, but gender, as expressed in an individual, is a much more fundamental part of one's psychological makeup.

One of the biggest failings of gender studies programs, IMO, is that they almost never cover this. Studying gender without an understanding of the transgender experience misses a great deal of evidence of the biological/psychological aspects of gender.

6. "Lola" by the Kinks
I met her in a club
down in old Soho
where you drink champagne
and it tastes just
like cherry cola
C-O-L-A cola

She walked up to me
and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name
and in a dark brown voice
she said Lola
L-O-L-A Lola
la la la la Lola

Well I'm not the world's
most physical guy
but when she squeezed me tight
she nearly broke my spine
oh my Lola
la la la la Lola
Well I'm not dumb
but I can't understand
why she walked like a woman
and talked like a man
oh my Lola
la la la la Lola
la la la la Lola

Well we drank champagne
and danced all night
under electric candle light
she picked me up and
sat me on her knee
and said "Dear boy
won't you come home with me?"

Well I'm not the world's
most passionate guy
but when I looked in her eyes
I almost fell for my
Lola la la la la Lola
la la la la Lola
Lola la la la la Lola
la la la la Lola

I pushed her away
I walked to the door
Well I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
then I looked at her
and she at me

Well that's the way
that I want it to stay
and I always want it
to be that wayfor my Lola
la la la la Lola

Girls will be boys
and boys will be girls
it's a mixed up
muddled up
shook up world
except for Lola
la la la la Lola

Well I left home just
a week before
and I'd never ever kissed
a woman before
but Lola smiled and
took me by the hand
and said "Dear boy
I'm gonna make you a man"

Well I'm not the world's
most masculine man
but I know what I am
and I'm glad I'm a man
and so is Lola
la la la la lola
la la la la Lola
Lola la la la la Lola
la la la la Lola

8. Kris Kristofferson - Eddie the Eunuch
Eddie the Eunuch was a weasel
Nasty as an old man's nose
Making believin' he was evil
Struttin' in his mama's clothes

You know that Eddie had a bad connection
Never had a chance to ball
Sleeping in the wrong direction, baby
Dreaming he was ten feet tall

But now Eddie the Eunuch is a rock and roll critic
Sucking like a super star
Slicker than a shoe-shine
Quicker than a two-time
Eddie what a thang you are

Eddie makes a damn good livin', baby
Putting other people down
Eddie couldn't ever forgive them baby
'Cause he wasn't Jackson Browne

or, my favorite version... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh2Yxp6q2h0&feature=related

This is a man's world, this is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

You see, man made the cars to take us over the road
Man made the trains to carry heavy loads
Man made electric light to take us out of the dark
Man made the boat for the water, like Noah made the ark

This is a man's, a man's, a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

Man thinks about a little baby girls and a baby boys
Man makes then happy 'cause man makes them toys
And after man has made everything, everything he can
You know that man makes money to buy from other man

This is a man's world
But it wouldn't be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl

He's lost in the wilderness
He's lost in bitterness

Amazing that he was a teenager then.

I'm really partial to Chicago's version as the arrangement just blows me away. They were on it for that one.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HK_TXfKfyag

I am just a cowboy lonesome on the trail
a starry night,the campfire light
The coyote call, and the howling winds wail
So I'll ride out to the old sundown

I am just a cowboy lonesome on the trail
Lord, I'm just thinking about a certain female
The nights we spent together riding on the RANGE
Looking back it seems so strange

Roll me over and turn me around
Let me keep spinning till I hit the ground
Roll me over and let me go
Riding in the rodeo

I was took in Texas I did not know her name
Lord, all these southern girls seem the same
Down below the border in a town in Mexico
I got my job busting broncs for the rodeo

Roll me over and turn me around
Let me keep spinning till I hit the ground
Roll me over and let me go
Running free with the buffalo
Here I go

Roll me over and I'll turn around
And I'll move my fingers up and down
Up and down

It's ok amigos
Just let me go
Riding in the rodeo

Roll me over and turn me around
Let me keep spinning till i hit the ground
Roll me over and let me go
Riding in the rodeo
Roll me over and set me free
The cowboy's life is the life for me

51. Muddy Waters - Mannish Boy
Ooooooh, yeah, ooh, yeah

Everythin', everythin', everythin's gonna be alright this mornin'
Ooh yeah, whoaw
Now when I was a young boy, at the age of five
My mother said I was, gonna be the greatest man alive
But now I'm a man, way past 21
Want you to believe me baby,
I had lot's of fun
I'm a man
I spell mmm, aaa child, nnn
That represents man
No B, O child, Y
That mean mannish boy
I'm a man
I'm a full grown man
I'm a man
I'm a natural born lovers man
I'm a man
I'm a rollin' stone
I'm a man
I'm a hoochie coochie man

Sittin' on the outside, just me and my mate
You know I'm made to move you honey,
come up two hours late
Wasn't that a man
I spell mmm, aaa child, nnn
That represents man
No B, O child, Y
That mean mannish boy
I'm a man
I'm a full grown man
Man
I'm a natural born lovers man
Man
I'm a rollin' stone
Man-child
I'm a hoochie coochie man
The line I shoot will never miss
When I make love to a woman,
she can't resist
I think I go down,
to old Kansas Stew
I'm gonna bring back my second cousin,
that little Johnny Cocheroo
All you little girls,
sittin'out at that line
I can make love to you woman,
in five minutes time
Ain't that a man
I spell mmm, aaa child, nnn
That represents man
No B, O child, Y
That mean mannish boy
Man
I'm a full grown man
Man
I'm a natural born lovers man
Man
I'm a rollin' stone
I'm a man-child
I'm a hoochie coochie man
well, well, well, well
hurry, hurry, hurry, hurry
Don't hurt me, don't hurt me child
don't hurt me, don't hurt, don't hurt me child
well, well, well, well

Yeah

63. Awesome tune. Many subsequent compositions can be traced back to parts of this song.
Muddy was a tremendous influence on modern Blues and Rock&Roll.

55. "A Boy Named Sue" -- Johnny Cash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M89c3hWx3RQ

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue."

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do!
Now your gonna die!!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Sue.'"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!

59. Only Women Bleed_Alice Cooper
An oldie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXW9w17Tf0A

Man's got his woman to take his seed
He's got the power - oh
She's got the need
She spends her life through pleasing up her man
She feeds him dinner or anything she can

She cries alone at night too often
He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

Man makes your hair gray
He's your life's mistake
All you're really lookin' for is an even break

He lies right at you
You know you hate this game
He slaps you once in a while and you live and love in pain

She cries alone at night too often
He smokes and drinks and don't come home at all
Only women bleed

Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

Black eyes all of the time
Don't spend a dime
Clean up this grime
And you there down on your knees begging me please come
Watch me bleed

Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed
Only women bleed

66. The Laziest Gal in Town - (My Theme song!)
Cole Porter - Marlena Deitrich

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g-NkaFYpmE

It's not 'cause I shouldn't
It's not 'cause I couldn't
And you know
That it's not 'cause I couldn't
It's simply because
I'm the laziest gal in town

My poor heart is achin'
To bring home bacon
And if I find myself
Alone and I'm forsaken
It's simply because
I'm the laziest gal in town

Though I'm more
Than willing to learn
How these gals
Get money to burn
Every little proposition
I turn it down
'Way down

It's not 'cause I wouldn't
It's not 'cause I shouldn't
And, you know
That it's not 'cause
I couldn't
It's simply because
I'm the laziest gal in town

79. Ha!
While I knew Dietrich was the inspiration for Lilly Von Schtupp, the only reason I am familiar with the song is because I got to see the Great Julie Wilson perform it several times.

Here's a video of Ms. Wilson in her chanteuse prime:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sd3UtltqLgA

But you're probably right about that Cole Porter/Dietrich number being the inspiration for the choice of "I'm Tired" as Von Schtupp's song.
