Prison afraid inmates will use Victoria Secret shiv to bust out

Would you shed your bra for a client? Earlier this month, Miami attorney Brittney Horstman did just that, while trying to pay a visit to a client at the Miami Federal Detention Center — but it did not help her case.

When Horstman visited the center on June 4, she set the metal detector off. The guards at the detention center barred her from entering while wearing a bra with underwire. The prison dress code doesn’t bar the bras, but it appears to be informal policy at the prison — presumably because an inmate might use the metal to make a Victoria’s Secret shiv and bust out.

So Horstman went to the bathroom and took her bra off. But the guards again declined to let her enter.

1. Heh. They didn't let her enter because going in without a bra is against policy.

My word. Turns out the prison specifically does allow underwire bras (apparently many bras are wired; one more thing women know but men like me do not) but the guards didn't get the memo.

2. underwires are dangerous

if you've ever had one work its way out of a bra, it HURTS. it's like sticking a needle in your skin.

I used to have steel toe boots and I had to stop wearing them to get on airplanes because I'd always set off the alarms.

now when I travel, it's sports bras and flip flops.
