Is there a genre of music you totally HATE?
I mean a genre of music you NEVER want to hear again?
You detest it that much?

For me:
Church hymns.

Not only are they usually insipid, there usually is people in the church singing, who are absolutely tone-deaf.

1. I'm with you on the church hymns and may I also add country music.
It's funny -- I grew up with country played constantly in my house (my dad was a dj and for a # of years the radio station he worked for played country). For me, familiarity bred utter contempt, while my sister is a big fan to this day. Go figure.

2. Rap, because of the punk-assed, fake-assed "gangstas" in my neighborhood
Up and down the street on those earthshaker car stereos, muthafuckin' this and muthafuckin' that, from sunup til sundown and all points in between. Little punk-assed "gangsta" wannabes who live with their parents.

Sometimes I'd like to blare church hymns back at them. It's not that I like them, but they would seem to be an antidote.

5. Disco
Hated it in the 70's. Thought it would be gone forever by 1980. Still hate it.

Also anything that uses AutoTune.

If you can't sing, DON'T. Unless you can write songs like Dylan or Tom Waits that are so good that nobody cares how shitty your voice is. But if you need a computer to record a vocal, don't fucking bother. Especially if you're a rapper and aren't really singing to begin with.

It's not cool. It's not funky. It's not hip hop. It's just SUCK.

26. I have issue with "genre"....
Hi,
I find the artificial construct of "genre" to be rather limiting. I used to say I can't stand "Country" music. Well I enjoy a lot of old timey "country music" so that eliminates that. Rap? What is rap what is hip-hop? Is Humpty Dance rap? I don't know, it is late and I am rambling, I just know I judge individual pieces as they are and try not to categorize then even though I kind of did in this post!

Interesting topic though, thanks for posting.

Peace

Sheena Easton with steel guitars. Jimmy Buffet with a fiddle.

Listen to off-the-radar country acts like Steve Earle, Neko Case, The Jayhawks, Old 97s, etc, as well as the old warhorses like Willy, Waylon, and Johnny.

As an atheist, I sort of enjoy hymns & gospel, but Christian pop/rock makes me want to die a fiery painful death . As a genre, it's truly horrible.

I also don't care for European disco/house music. Boom tsst boom tsst boom tsst boom tsst boom tsst.... (repeat for 2 hours.)

Aside from that, I can enjoy all other genres of music.

27. I have issues with "genre" .....
Hi,
I used to say I hate country music, well as that is defined today, that is that poppy stuff that is played on the radio today. I love some of the old timey country that I am not sure how would that be identified today. In terms of "rap" is Humpty Dance "rap" or "hip hop"? I guess it all comes down to how you define genres and many artists cross those boundaries. Interesting subject, thanks for posting this.

What genre would my current favorite band The Avett Brothers be categorized? I am thinking the only one I can eliminate is classical.

Peace

Edited on Fri Jun-18-10 09:15 AM by Tommy_Carcetti
I won't say all heavy metal, because I think Metallica and a handful of other metal bands are decent, plus the Pumpkins have been partly influenced by heavy metal, so it's not all bad.

But Nu Metal, Hair Metal and Death Metal are horrid. Just horrid.

Oh, and what genre is ABBA? It's not rock, it's not really pop, it's not really disco, it's....just a sickening-sweet sludge of sound typically belted out by drunken wedding guests. Yeah, I'd say ABBA is a genre of its own, and it sucks.

Edit to add 1980s Yuppie Schlock SynthPop. Add your rick-roll here. Although Schlock Pop sometimes falls into the "so bad it's good" catagory. Whenever I hear Howard Jones' "Things Can Only Get Better" or Spandau Ballet's "True", I'm horrified, but I cannot turn away.

I don't mind metal if it's done right, but if I hear one more sludging, gothy band fronted by a cookie-monster-inspired vocalist I will be forced -- forced, I tell you -- to sacrifice said frontman to Satan. I'm sure he'd want it that way. (The vocalist, I mean, not Satan. He probably wouldn't want that at all, as he'd like these vocalists to remain alive, spreading their throaty evil across the globe.)

69. Nah, too much beauty in everything to worry about hating genres.
I find if I hate a whole genre, I've missed something, so I try to hear it as a devotee would. If I still don't get it, I just move on and leave it to people who love it.

Why bother hating music when there are so many stupid drivers to hate instead?

82. Maybe you just haven't heard the right kind. I've heard some jazz solos in even Polka..
...that was ..ah...rather neat and cool. :)

PS...if you're talking about dixieland...yeah...can't blame you.

105. I watched it. Pretty neat. I played in a Polka Band once. Sax is my main instrument but I also..
... play Bass.

I like that type of Polka and a lot of the Swedish ones. They seem more "Happy" and carefree.
The German Polkas (sometimes) can be rather...ummm...thinking...Military and trudging. (that slow OOOMP..OOOMP..OOOMP)

:)

83. Definitely church music. There are actually some rap songs I
like. Blondie's "Rapture" IMO was rap and one of the first. I'm not into most current rap but every now and then something comes along that I get into.

84. Chinese Opera
Most of the usual suspects - rap, country, shallow pop music - have at least some good examples. And I like a lot of stuff that lots of people hate - early 20th century modernist stuff, minimalism, Indian music, etc. But Chinese Opera is just pure torture.

No wonder opium addiction used to be such a big problem in China - they needed it to dull the pain of their terrible, terrible entertainment.

And there is a lot of horrible church music, true. But Bach (among others) wrote lots of hymns that are awesome.

93. GUH - me too
Although hate isn't the way I would describe it - more of a preference to NOT listen to it. Show tunes, death metal, and full gospel. Everything else - I'm pretty eclectic so I like a little bit of everything. Current favorites are medieval polyphonic chant and techno.

94. Gangsta rap & Nashville Pop.
Nashville Pop doesn't qualify as country. Country music is Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Waylon & Willie, etc.

I detest gangsta rap. 99% of rappers are poseurs.

101. Singers who show off their pipes and don't know how to sing the damned song.
Sinatra and Fitzgerald know their stuff. So do many others.

Whitney Houston, Marian Carey and Michael Bolton wouldn't know HOW to sing a song if it hit them in the ass. It's all about them.

(as there may be individual songs in some genres I don't hate, but overall hate the genre)

gospel, contemporary Christian, country (minus a few old country songs and a few country-pop crossover songs), jazz, big band era, and most rap/hip-hop.

And country (can't stand twang). And modern jazz (the dissonance frays my nerves). And church hymns (terribly written). And...er...prog rock. :hide:
