RIP Garry Marshall Shider (July 24, 1953 – June 16, 2010) Vocalist/Guitar of Funkadelic
RIP. Garry Marshall "Diaper Man" Shider (July 24, 1953 – June 16, 2010) was an American
musician and guitarist. He was musical director of the P-Funk
All-Stars for much of their history. He is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,
inducted in 1997 with fifteen other members of Parliament-Funkadelic.

12 years ago my band Funkabilly opened for Maceo Parker/Fred Wesley in St. Louis at an outdoor stage. In our set we did a version of Red Hot Mama and ended with Cosmic Slop... after our set Maceo and Fred were next to me. Fred asked if I was the singer- I answered yes. He told me that over dinner as they watched us he said to Maceo "They sound like it- but they don't LOOK like it!" (we're a bunch of white guys). We all had a good laugh. Then Maceo looked me straight in the eyes and said "when you did Cosmic Slop I thought that was Garry Shider up there singin'" My jaw dropped... somehow I had the sense to shake his hand and say "Thank you... thank you so much!" THE ULTIMATE COMPLIMENT!

Garry has always been and will continue to be one of my major musical influences. He will be sorely missed by so many.

1. I've just belatedly come to appreciate him
and he lived just around the Beltway from me, in Upper Marlboro.

I had nothing but a PFunk greatest hits album to listen to, but knew nothing of the history. I started to obsess on Youtube clips, and started reading a few weeks ago. There was a huge amount of individual talent in this band.

My recent favorite is (Not Just) Knee Deep.

and I think that Flashlight is the greatest funk tune ever.

but the level of art in Parliment-Funkadelic is vast.

disclosure: I at onetime worked with a woman who had been a Bride of Funkenstein for five years or so.

5. Just saw this in a local Albuquerque alternative paper re: help with his medical bills

I assume you must be very honored to have had the opportunity to do that gig and justifiably proud at the words of praise from those two musical giants.

Here is part of the article with the link to the rest of it which contains the links to the organization set up to help. An old friend of many people here, myself included, named Eric McFadden, used to play guitar with P-Funk not too long ago, so there is a personal connection for many of us here.

In the last few weeks the members of the Mothership have been working on a few benefits to pay for Garry's care (this is a good time for us all to remember that, though P-Funk is iconic, they're not exactly rolling around in stacks of money). Though Garry left the Earth last night, his family is still faced with bills. The Garry Shider Medical Fund has been set up in conjunction with an organization called Sweet Relief, a non-profit charity that offers help to musicians without medical insurance.

Paypal donations to Garry's fund will be split 80/20 with Sweet Relief to help other musicians in their time of need.

Since Garry got sick a benefit album of fan tracks has been in the works as well and will be available, hopefully next week--depending on funeral services--at the Medical Fund site as well as Citradelic.com.

Rest in Peace funky brother!
