I need some medical advice.

My landline cordless phone has been chock full o' static lately, and every so often it does a double-beep (identical to the sound of pressing two keys in succession). Sometimes it simply drops the call, with a brief silence followed by a click and a dialtone, while other times it drops the call and basically goes dead.

The phone's probably seven years old or so, but the battery's not more than two. We don't use the phone a great deal, and we always keep it in the charging cradle when it's not in use.

Does it seem to you that the phone itself is dying, or is it merely the battery? I ask because a battery costs about $14, while a new (equivalent) phone would cost about $20. And if I get another seven years out of a $20 phone, I won't really complain.
