1. I can't compare them.
Bon Scott is/was by far the better of the two. But, I have a lot of love for Brian Johnson stepping up to take that spot and to be happy being a lesser frontman than Bon in favor of Angus. Plus, Johnson has made it possible for AC/DC to make one hell of a lot of fantastic music in a post-Bon Scott world.

3. I listened to them throughout the Bon Scott era,
but not with Brian Johnson. I did not dislike the new band, it just wasn't AC/DC for me.

Anyways, punk hit and that was that for my young world.

Great and glorious BAND all the same.

5. Interesting bit of trivia:
Back in Black is the (or at least *used to be*) second best selling album (behind "Thriller") on the planet. Not The Beatles, not The Stones, not Madonna. AC/DC.

7. It's funny,
I just read that factoid the other day for the first time...their popularity is phenomenal.

They were huge in southern California when I grew up in the late 70s early 80s. HUGE. Every punk I knew listened to them, the Bon Scott stuff mostly.

8. I'm an AC/DC maniac and I didn't know it until Top Gear had Johnson on
for their Star In a Reasonably Priced Car. It was mentioned that they'd outsold The Beatles, and I was like...no way. Looked it up, and sure enough.

BTW, very entertaining 10 minutes of Top Gear with Brian Johnson

21. Yes, Bon by far had more swagger, more charm, more personality.
But Johnson has done quite well creating a new version of the band, just very workmanlike, not as bluesy, but direct and gritty.

I like both--I only got into AC/DC with Back in Black, then went back and discovered the 1970's version--but Bon was more of the rock STAR.

2. I prefer Bon Scott's singing voice.
But Brian Johnson is a helluva frontman. And he's been holding it together for what...like 30 years now?

10. Bon Scott
Don't get me wrong, I have much love and respect for Brian stepping in and taking over, but Dirty Deeds is still my all time fav AC/DC album. RIP Bon.

12. Think of the band(s) like INXS that have not been able to do what AC/DC did after Bon's death.
Mindblowing tightness in that band in both incarnations.

14. It also shows the chasm of a difference between the Young bros and the Van Halen bros
AC/DC has had what, 3 drummers, 3 bassists and 2 lead singers. Never stopped rocking. Van Halen? That kaboom you heard was everything after 5150.

20. Uh... more like about halfway through 5150
When they ran out of the material they had already written with Dave, and had to actually write songs with Hagar. By Sammy's own admission, the first thing they wrote was the cheesy synthesizer ballad about aliens pulling tampon strings.

I definitely prefer Bon era Ac/Dc to Brian Johnson, because with Johnson, it's been the same album over and over again for 30 years, which wasn't the case with Bon. 6 great albums with him, each one different.

But even Back in Black Ice (or whatever that last album was called) beats the living shit out of Van Hagar.

Most bands would have been done for, but AC DC are the bounceback champs :)
