Captain Beefheart/Don Van Vliet fans...
I just went to John French's MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/drumbojohnfrench) looking into a little history of the band this morning after finding out Alex St. Clair had died a few years back. I found this message:

"Captain Beefheart

Jun 2 2010 2:59 AM

This is yer ol' pal Don Van Vliet..."

Here's the link to "Captain Beefheart's" page: http://www.myspace.com/502930835

Could this really be who it says it is? I don't think he's made any public statements in years (although he has had a show of his paintings at a small New York gallery).

1. Other than painting, Don's been a virtual recluse
I have serious doubts that he's a "My Space" kinda guy.

When Frank died, Don went to see him one last time. Reporters tried to ask him about what took place. His reply was something along the lines of "It was a conversation between two friends, and it was private."

So the "yer ol' pal Don Van Vliet" comment...in addition to not having Don's "voice"...reeks of an imposter.

:toast:

2. I tend to agree with you.
From my understanding, DVV is in an advanced stage of MS. It's not inconceivable that he could have found a way--whether through an aide or technology--to access the internet. But it seems a little far-fetched that he'd suddenly set up a MySpace page and invite John French there with a post adorned with a YouTube clip.
