My grandmother died 20 years ago tonight

She was a four-foot something Irish woman who came to this country in the 1920s and learned to love hockey fights and live and die with the Red Sox. Right now, she's probably up there trying to tell Johnny Most to calm down.

I still miss her.

1. I'll bet my Dad's mom, who always lived nearby was about that tall.

A sassy little lady with a dry and quiet humor who played a mean game of chess at 10 and of gin rummy at 15. Actually the first grown up in my life to come straight out ask if I was getting stoned, not because she wanted to scold, but because she used it medicinally and didn't want to shock me. I was 18 when a kidney condition got the better of her. That was coming up on thirty years ago, I see her clear as day every day in my mind's eye. It's always a familiar comfort.

Ah, Grandmothers are special! I still love and miss mine...

She was 100% Swede, and a great lady. Born on the fourth of July, 1894, I think...
